Republican Governors Association Announces Record Fundraising

The Republican Governors Association says it raised a record amount of cash last year, setting the GOP up to be competitive in the 2010 elections.

The RGA brought in $30 million in 2009, surpassing its previous fundraising record of $28.2 million set in 2006, the group announced in a press release Monday.

"The RGA's fundraising success ... will allow us to target an unprecedented number of races this year," Executive Director Nick Ayers said. "With 37 governors' races taking place and redistricting on the horizon, the stakes couldn't get any higher."

The GOP hopes to regain a majority of governorships in the November elections. After the governors-elect of New Jersey and Virginia, Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell, are sworn in, Republicans will control the statehouses of 24 states.
