James von Brunn, the 89-year-old man charged with killing a guard in a shooting at Washington's Holocaust museum, has died in a prison hospital.

A spokesperson with North Carolina's Butner federal prison said von Brunn died Wednesday afternoon.

Von Brunn suffered from a variety of health problems, including congestive heart failure, according to the Associated Press.

Von Brunn had been awaiting trial in the killing of security guard Stephen T. Johns at the museum in June. The suspect was wounded by return fire.

Von Brunn was a white supremacist who had written racist and anti-Semitic screeds on the Internet prior to the shooting.

A.J. Kramer, an attorney for von Brunn, called the death "a sad end to a tragic situation," but declined further comment.
