One of the story lines in Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd's decision not to seek re-election was that it increased the Democrats' chances of holding his seat, and that may also be true in Colorado where first-term Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter said he would not run again according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Jan. 6.

Fifty-two percent of Colorado voters disapprove of the job Ritter is doing compared to 44 percent who approve. In a Rasmussen poll last month, former Republican Rep. Scott McInnis led Ritter 48 percent to 40 percent.

However, matched against Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, McInnis leads by only 45 percent to 42 percent, within the poll's 4 point margin of error. Five percent said they preferred some other candidate and 8 percent were undecided.

Rasmussen also matched McInnis up against Interior Secretary Ken Salazar who represented the state in the Senate. However, Salazar has decided to stay in the cabinet and endorsed Hickenlooper. McInnis led Salazar 47 percent to 41 percent with 2 percent preferring someone else and 9 percent undecided.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
