Washington in 60 Seconds: Terror Report 'Shock' Coming

Good morning, Capitolists! Senators and House members may be away from Washington, but they're making a surprising amount of headlines, even from their home districts. From announcing their retirements to vowing to bring down the health care bill if it's not to their liking, here are the headlines in Washington today:

* Three Down. The Democrats' three retirements in 24 hours are the top story HERE, HERE and of course HERE, at Politics Daily.

* Christmas Attack Report a "Shock." Today the White House will release a report on what went wrong before a known security risk was allowed to board the Detroit-bound plane on Christmas Day. National Security Adviser Jim Jones tells USA Today that Americans will feel "a certain shock" when they read the declassified report and says the president "is legitimately and correctly alarmed." Yikes.

* The Story Everyone's Talking About. Peter Orszag, the White House budget director, makes the front page of the New York Post this morning under the screaming headline, "O Budget Director Has Love Child." And it turns out it's true. The president's brainy numbers man has two children from a previous marriage, but recently fathered a third with a girlfriend, before becoming engaged to an ABC News reporter. Who knew Orszag was such a hot ticket?

* Stupak Showdown Coming. The New York Times profiles Rep. Bart Stupak this morning, and writes that the pro-life Democratic congressman "wears scorn as a medal." He'll have plenty of scorn from liberal Democrats if he follows up on his vow to stop the health care bill if it does not include his language tightly restricting abortion funding. "It's not the end of the world if it goes down," he told the Times. Stay tuned.

* Brown Vows to Strip Nelson's Deal. Continuing the theme of lawmakers saying the darnedest things when they go home for recess, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) promised the much-derided special deal for Nebraska secured by his colleague Sen. Ben Nelson will never become a reality. The Toledo Blade reports Brown vowed, "You can bet that won't be law by the time that goes into effect."

* They're on the List! They won't testify before Congress, but the party-crashing Salahis will take a gig hosting at the Vegas nightclub Pure later this month, according to The Washington Post's gossip girls. Other celebs who have hosted at the club: Tonya Harding and Heidi and Spencer from "The Hills."
