Economy Loses More Jobs, but Unemployment Still at 10 Percent

The U.S. economy lost more jobs in December, but the unemployment rate stayed at 10 percent, the Associated Press reports. The labor department said that employers cut 85,000 jobs last month, more than 10 times the forecasted decrease of 8,000.

A sharp drop in the labor force, a sign that many workers are giving up on finding new jobs, kept the employment rate the same as it was in November. Once someone stops looking for work, they are no longer counted among the unemployed.

According to revised figures, the economy gained 4,000 jobs in November, the first month of growth in over two years.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
