The video intelligence from drones like the Predator and the newer and larger Reaper have produced 24 years' worth of footage from Afghanistan and Iraq, leaving analysts struggling to keep up with it, the
New York Times reports.
After all the questions about intelligence agencies' ability to "connect the dots" that arose after the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a U.S. airliner, the military is trying to find ways to prevent an overload of data that would impede its ability to provide troops on the ground with quick warnings about the movement of insurgents and the planting of roadside bombs.
The Times says that, as part of this effort, the Air Force and other military units are even trying to learn from techniques used by commercial broadcasters, such as the "telestrator" that former NFL announcer John Madden used to map out football plays.
