The Department of Homeland Security announced Sunday that it will granted special temporary protected status to Haitian nationals who were in the United States on or before Jan. 12, 2010.
"This is a disaster of historic proportions, and this designation will allow eligible Haitian nationals in the United States to continue living and working in our country for the next 18 months," department chief Janet Napolitano said
in a statement. "Providing a temporary refuge for Haitian nationals who are currently in the United States and whose personal safety would be endangered by returning to Haiti is part of this administration's continuing efforts to support Haiti's recovery."
The department warned that though it is "tempting" for Haitians to flee the devastation by immigrating to the U.S. illegally, new arrivals will not be given the protected status and will be deported.
Our New Approach to Comments
In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers –
a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around.
