Capitol Hill Bureau Chief
Good morning, Capitolists (especially those of you who are
not members of the Congressional Democratic leadership; for the rest of you, our condolences, and better luck next time).
Also, happy anniversary, President Obama! It's been exactly one year since you came to Washington on a wave of hope and change. As a special surprise, Massachusetts got you a present, which you can open in couple of weeks.
Until then, here's just a fraction of what's making news in Washington on a busy, busy day.
* The Story Everybody's Talking About. In case you haven't heard, Scott Brown has gassed up his pickup and is coming to town. Read all about it
HERE, and what it all means
HERE and
HERE.

The Games Begin. The congressional schedule is packed today with Republican victory-lap press conferences, which will certainly and rightly blame the Democratic agenda for the Massachusetts mauling. Fewer Republicans, however, will mention the interpretation of Erik Erickson, of
Red State fame, who told CNN viewers last night that both the Democratic
and the Republican establishment should get the blame for the Brown blow-out. "If I were a Democratic or Republican establishment guy, I would be feeling a little sick tonight."
*
Charge It! In an case of unfortunate timing, the Senate will begin debate today on raising the debt ceiling of the United States to $14 trillion. A block of moderates, already spooked before the small-government Massachusetts victory of Scott Brown, may block the vote to protest the lack of restraint on the federal wallet. Lori Montgomery has the latest at
The Washington Post.
*
Salahis Taking the Fifth. Is there a better way to follow a weekend of partying in Vegas than going to Capitol Hill to appear before the House Homeland Security Committee and take the fifth? Michaele and Tareq Salahi will find out this morning at 10.
*
The System Worked Didn't Work. Also on the Hill this morning will be the top intelligence officials in the country, explaining what went wrong on Christmas Day when a man boarded a U.S.-bound flight with a bomb in his pants. Expect Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair and counterterrorism official Michael Leiter (unless he's skiing).
*
One Down. NBC News is reporting that Erroll Southers, the Obama nominee to head the Transportation Security Administration, has withdrawn his name from consideration after a Senate hold had delayed his confirmation for months. Southers blamed a "political agenda," in his announcement, and the White House has accepted his withdrawal "with great sadness."

SCOTUS Watch. The Supreme Court will release several opinions this morning, including possibly a decision on a key campaign finance reform case. Watch it live at 10 at
SCOTUS Blog.
