Republican Toomey Widens Leads in Pennsylvania Senate Race

Former Republican Rep. Pat Toomey leads both Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak, who is challenging Specter for their party's nomination, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Jan. 18.
Toomey, who headed the conservative Club for Growth after leaving Congress, bests Specter 49 percent to 40 percent with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 8 percent undecided. He leads Sestak 43 percent to 35 percent with 6 percent preferring some other candidate and 16 percent undecided.
Last month, Toomey led Specter 46 percent to 42 percent and Sestak by 44 percent to 38 percent.
Forty-seven percent say they strongly oppose the health care legislation in Congress and those voters overwhelmingly favor Toomey.
Meanwhile, in a Specter vs. Sestak Democratic primary, Specter leads 53 percent to 32 percent with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 11 percent undecided. Last month, Specter led Sestak by 48 percent to 35 percent.
