Former Republican Rep. Pat Toomey leads both Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak, who is challenging Specter for their party's nomination, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Jan. 18.

Toomey, who headed the conservative Club for Growth after leaving Congress, bests Specter 49 percent to 40 percent with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 8 percent undecided. He leads Sestak 43 percent to 35 percent with 6 percent preferring some other candidate and 16 percent undecided.

Last month, Toomey led Specter 46 percent to 42 percent and Sestak by 44 percent to 38 percent.

Forty-seven percent say they strongly oppose the health care legislation in Congress and those voters overwhelmingly favor Toomey.

Meanwhile, in a Specter vs. Sestak Democratic primary, Specter leads 53 percent to 32 percent with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 11 percent undecided. Last month, Specter led Sestak by 48 percent to 35 percent.
