70 Percent Say Democrats' Loss of Veto-Proof Majority Is 'Good for the Country'

Seventy percent of Americans say it is good for the country that the Democrats lost the Senate race in Massachusetts and no longer have the 60 vote supermajority that allowed them to pass legislation without cooperation from the Republicans, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll conducted Jan. 22-24.

Here's how CNN worded the question: "Until that special election, the Democrats had sixty votes in the U.S. Senate which allowed them to pass legislation without any votes from Republican Senators. Now the Democrats still have a largemajority but cannot pass bills without cooperation from at least one Republican Senator. Do you think this change will be good for the country or bad for the country?"

Twenty-eight percent said it was bad for the country.

Forty-four percent viewed the Massachusetts result as a minor setback for the Democrats while 38 percent said it was major. Seventeen percent said it would have no effect.

The poll also found that almost half of Americans say they are angry at both the Democrats and Republicans for the way they have been dealing with the country's problems. Forty-eight percent expressed anger at both parties, 9 percent said they were only angry at Republicans, 11 percent were only angry at Democrats and 32 percent were not angry at either.

However, Democrats slipped by one other measure in the poll. Forty-eight percent said it was bad for the country that Democrats controlled Congress while 45 percent said it was good for the country. Eight percent said it was neither good or bad, or had no opinion. (The margin of error was 3 points). That's a turnaround from June when 50 percent said Democratic control of Congress was good and 41 percent said it was bad. In January 2009, when the new Congress convened, 58 percent thought Democratic control was for the good.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
