To measure how much of a blow it is to Delaware Democrats now that state Attorney General Beau Biden has decided not to seek his father's old Senate seat, check out this Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Jan. 25 after word of Biden's decision: popular nine-term Republican Rep. Mike Castle leads potential Democratic challenger Christopher Coons 56 percent to 27 percent, with 5 percent preferring another candidate and 13 percent undecided.

In a previous Rasmussen poll, Castle led Biden 47 percent to 42 percent.

Coons, who is the New Castle County Executive, has said he is considering the race.

Castle is seen favorably by 66 percent of voters and unfavorably by 25 percent. Coons is seen favorably by 47 percent and unfavorably by 30 percent, but with 23 percent not having an opinion of him, is less well known than Castle.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
