NASA Won't Get Money for Moon Mission

President Obama's budget proposal due out next week will not include money for NASA to fund a new mission to the moon, it was reported Wednesday.

There will be no funding for the Constellation program, which was to return humans to the moon by 2020, or the Ares I rocket, the replacement for the space shuttle, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"We certainly don't need to go back to the moon," one administration official told the paper.

Instead, the White House will direct NASA to develop new technology "designed to someday enable human exploration of asteroids and the inner solar system."

The space agency will also devote resources to earth-bound projects, such as researching and monitoring climate change.

In addition, the administration planned to extend the life of the International Space Station to at least 2020.

Obama's proposed government spending freeze will not apply to NASA, the Times reported.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
