Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is far outdistancing state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner for the GOP nomination for governor in California, but she trails state Attorney General (and former governor) Jerry Brown in a general election match-up, according to a Public Policy Institute of California conducted Jan. 12-19.

Whitman leads Poizner 41 percent to 11 percent with 4 percent preferring someone else and 44 percent undecided.

In the general election, Brown leads Whitman 41 percent to 36 percent with 23 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3 points.
