With the publication of today's main story by Adam Zagorin and Michael Smallberg, Politics Daily is launching its new investigative reporting unit.

Our investigative coverage, dedicated to the fundamental belief that readers need to know what's going on beneath the crush of daily events, adds original, in-depth, reported examinations to our online newspaper's lineup.

Investigative newspaper writing has long been a mainstay of American journalism and democracy, pioneered and perpetuated by enterprise reporters Upton Sinclair, Nelly Bly, Ida Tarbell, Woodward and Bernstein, Seymour Hersh, Drew Pearson, Jack Anderson, Jonathan Kwitny, Don Bolles, Morton Mintz, and Daniel Pearl. Tracking leads and cracking cover-ups, they revealed dangers in our food supply, abuse and neglect of the mentally ill, political influence by organized crime, manufacture of unsafe automobiles, breakdowns in our military, corporate malfeasance, the spread of terrorism, and corruption in the White House.

At its best, investigative reporting challenges the way readers think. We will bring you stories that are fair, sturdy, often complicated, and always without partisan agenda.

Edited and guided by veteran investigator Bonnie Goldstein and her husband, the writer James Grady, we will draw from PD's staff of award-winning veteran writers.

To help readers better understand the complexities of public policy, we'll be checking in on and reporting about the work of dogged overseers of good governance at regulatory agencies, subpoena-armed subcommittee staffers on Capitol Hill, and tireless auditors of accountability in inspectors general offices.

Today, we're both picking up a challenge and putting out a call. The challenge is to drill down to bring our readers important information. The call is for investigative journalists to bring their best to us so that we can bring their hard work to you. Everyone at Politics Daily sees this as a serious responsibility and a tough new level of commitment to our readers. We all know and are guided by one central principle: You deserve our best.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
