Kay Bailey Hutchison by 44 percent to 29 percent in the race for their party's gubernatorial nomination, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 1. In January, Perry had led 43 percent to 33 percent.
Former Wharton County Republican chair Debra Medina, a favorite of libertarian, conservative and Tea Party activists, had the backing of 16 percent. She gained 4 points since the last poll, which is the same amount of support that Hutchison lost. Last November, Medina's support stood at 4 percent. In the current poll, another 11 percent were undecided.
Rasmussen says Perry leads Hutchison by 18 points among primary voters who describe themselves as conservative. Hutchison leads by 11 points among moderates, but Rasmussen calculates that to win, 50 percent of those who turn out would have to be moderate, a huge challenge given that conservatives usually dominate GOP primaries.
