Three U.S. Soldiers Killed in Pakistan

Three American soldiers were killed and two others were wounded in a bomb attack in northwest Pakistan, it was reported Wednesday.

The explosion near a school in the Lower Dir region also killed a Pakistani soldier and three children and injured 122 other people, according to The New York Times.

There were conflicting accounts of the bombing. Local police said a suicide bomber in a car packed with explosives attacked an American military convoy, but other Pakistani officials said that the blast had come from a remote-controlled device.

Hours after the attack, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban called reporters and said the group was responsible for the blast, the Times reported. Pakistani officials had said the Lower Dir region, adjacent to the Taliban stronghold of Swat, had been cleared of militants

The American soldiers were part of a unit on its way to inspect a proposed site for development projects by the Frontier Corps, a paramilitary force that the U.S. Army has been training, according to a Pakistani official.

No U.S. soldiers are formally stationed in Pakistan.
