Mark Kirk leads state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias 46 percent to 40 percent for the Illinois Senate seat that once belonged to President Obama, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 3. Four percent prefer some other candidate and 10 percent are undecided. The margin of error is 4.5 percent.
Kirk and Giannoulias both won their parties' nominations in a primary held Tuesday.
Kirk is regarded favorably by 55 percent of voters and unfavorably by 33 percent, with 12 percent not sure. Giannoulias is seen favorably by 46 percent and unfavorably by 39 percent, with 15 percent not sure. In terms of hardcore support, 17 percent see Kirk "very favorably" while 12 percent say the same of Giannoulias.
Kirk's support among fellow Republicans (85 percent) is stronger than that of Giannoulias (76 percent) among Democrats. Those not identified with either party favor Kirk by 59 percent to 22 percent. Male voters heavily favor Kirk while woman strongly support Giannoulias.
