Jim Gibbons, but if former federal judge and state Attorney General Brian Sandoval wins the GOP nomination, Reid would find himself trailing by double-digits, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted Feb. 3. Reid has a small, statistically insignificant lead over another GOP hopeful, Michael Montandon, former mayor of North Las Vegas.
Gibbons has been hobbled by political battles, accusations of infidelity by his wife and a messy divorce. He was in court again last week giving a deposition in a case involving a woman who claimed he assaulted her in 2006.
Unsurprisingly, 63 percent of voters see Gibbons unfavorably while 35 percent see him positively.
Reid leads Gibbons 44 percent to 35 percent with 13 percent preferring another candidate and 8 percent undecided. He leads Montandon by 40 percent to 36 percent with 14 percent preferring someone else and 10 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4.5 points.
But Sandoval leads Reid 45 percent to 33 percent with 11 percent preferring someone else and 12 percent undecided. Reid draws 68 percent or higher in support from fellow Democrats in a race against Gibbons or Montandon, but that number falls to 56 percent if he faces Sandoval.
Montandon is the least recognized of the group with 32 percent saying they don't know enough about him to express a favorable or unfavorable opinion. Reid is seen unfavorably by 52 percent and favorably by 40 percent, with 9 percent not sure. Sandoval is seen favorably by 53 percent and unfavorably by 30 percent with 17 percent not sure.
Sandoval has the highest percentage of support among fellow Republicans in the match-ups against Reid with 77 percent backing him in such a contest. Gibbons gets the support of 63 percent of Republicans while Montandon gets 65 percent.
