Rumors are flying that New York Gov. David Paterson could be on the brink of resigning, and a source told the Associated Press that Paterson discussed his future -- including the possibility of resignation -- with Democratic leaders.

Paterson's election campaign denies that the governor has had any thought of stepping down from the job he assumed after Eliot Spitzer resigned amid scandal in 2008. "This is a new low even by the standards of Planet Albany," spokesman Peter Kauffmann said Sunday. "The circus of the past week entirely fabricated out of thin air and innuendo is an embarrassment for all who have played a role in fueling it."

The rumors included a report in Business Insider that the New York Times is sitting on a "bombshell" story on the governor, and that he was planning to resign as soon as the story ran. Stories in other New York publications suggested the exposé could have to do with Paterson's sex life, though the governor has already admitted to past drug use and adultery. Business Insider later amended its story to say that the Paterson campaign confirmed that a Times story is in the works, but it would be a "profile" that will run in the paper's Metro section.
