The latest survey of the Texas governor race pretty much tracks with other recent ones: Gov. Rick Perry is leading with 45 percent in the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison at 21 percent and Tea Party-favorite Debra Medina close behind at 19 percent. Sixteen percent are undecided.
The poll, conducted Feb. 1-7 by the University of Texas for the Texas Tribune, said that if the undecideds had to make a choice, 51 percent would go with Perry, 34 percent for Hutchison and 15 percent for Medina.
Fifty-one percent of Perry's backers say they support him "very strongly " compared to 47 percent for Hutchison and 42 percent for Medina.
In general election match-ups against Democrat Bill White, the former mayor of Houston, Perry leads 44 percent to 35 percent with 8 percent preferring someone else and 12 percent undecided. Hutchison leads him 43 percent to 34 percent with 9 percent preferring someone else and 14 percent undecided. Medina and White tie at 36 percent each with 8 percent preferring someone else and 21 percent undecided.
The margin of error is 3.46 points.
