President Obama vs. Scott Brown in Hoops Showdown?

It's well known that President Obama has got game, having played hoops growing up in Hawaii, recreationally while in college and law school, and in pick-ups games on the playgrounds of Chicago when working as a community organizer. He's even promised to replace the White House bowling alley with a basketball court.

Washington's newest senator, Scott Brown (R-Mass.), is also a baller. After winning election last month, Brown, a former guard at Tufts University, told NBC's Jay Leno and others that he'd love to take on the president in a game of one-on-one.

"I think it would be fun," Brown told The Associated Press. "It's not the Olympics, but I think it would be a good way to kind of break the ice and show the camaraderie that he's talking about. So, we can have our meeting on the basketball court instead of the caucus room."

Will Brown's hoop dream come true?

The mayor of Springfield, Mass., has extended invitations to the president and the senator to play a game in his city, where basketball was invented in 1891, The Boston Herald reported.

"As Mayor of the City of Springfield, the birthplace of basketball, it is indeed an honor and privilege to extend an invitation to you to participate in a friendly game of basketball with Senator Brown," Mayor Domenic Sarno wrote to Obama on Wednesday. "There are many charities in Springfield that would benefit greatly from the money this type of event would raise."

Sarno proposed that Obama and Brown play two-on-two, with the two men teaming up with their "best female basketball player." An obvious choice for Brown would be his daughter, Ayla, who is a star player at Boston College.

Thomas Walsh, a spokesman for Sarno, told the Herald that the White House was considering the invitation, but Brown's office responded immediately "and they've indicated the senator is definitely in and the ball is in the president's court."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
