Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine has the lead among Georgia Republicans seeking the party's gubernatorial nomination but, at this point, almost a third of voters are still undecided, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Feb. 26-28.

Oxendine draws 27 percent of the vote, with former Secretary of State Karen Handel in second place at 19 percent followed by Rep. Nathan Deal at 13 percent. Four other candidates are in low single-digits. That leaves "undecided" as the leader in this poll with 32 percent.

Oxendine's advantage is that he is better known than Deal or Handel. Sixty-three percent do not know enough about Handel to offer a favorable or unfavorable opinion and 72 percent are in the same position as far as Deal, while the that number for Oxendine is only 34 percent.

"Any of the candidates who have the resources to get themselves on TV all over the state should have a chance when it's time for voting," said PPP's Dean Debnam.

A PPP poll released yesterday had former Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes running statistically even with Oxendine, but ahead of Handel and Deal.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
