On his daily radio and television shows last week, Fox News personality Glenn Beck set out to convince his audience that "social justice," the term many Christian churches use to describe their efforts to address poverty and human rights, is a "code word" for communism and Nazism. Beck urged Christians to discuss the term with their priests and to leave their churches if leaders would not reconsider their emphasis on social justice.Philip Barlow, a professor of Mormon history at Utah State University, told The New York Times that, “One way to read the Book of Mormon is that it’s a vast tract on social justice,” adding, “A lot of Latter-Day Saints would think that Beck was asking them to leave their own church.” Mr. Beck may be showing himself the door away from Mormonism. Before 1920 the Mormon Church was a strong believer in social justice with their 'law of consecretion' which taught all members to give their posessions away to the church in exchange for a handout deemed sufficient for their needs by Mormon leadership. They built this idea from Acts 4:32-35, " . . . There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles feet; and distribution was made to each as any had need."
