Tom Hanks dropped in on the "poor slobs" in the White House press corps Thursday after the actor and producer Steven Spielberg enjoyed a private screening of their new HBO series, "The Pacific," with President Obama and his family.

Hanks detoured from the White House movie theater to the Brady Briefing Room to check on an espresso machine that he presented to reporters in 2004 after discovering the working press didn't have a simple coffee pot, CNN reported. The espresso-maker was still there, but not in very good shape. You're supposed to clean it after each use, he advised.

"I am going to get you another espresso machine," Hanks decided. "Let me see what I can do for the poor slobs in the Fourth Estate here."

With that zinger, the Oscar-winning actor left his ink-stained friends behind and headed back to Hollywood.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
