Obama Postpones Asian Trip to Focus on Health Care

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced Thursday that President Obama has again postponed his planned trip to Indonesia and Australia to continue his push to pass health care reform.

As Speaker Nancy Pelosi has struggled to secure the 216 votes needed to pass the bill in the House, the president has talked up the measure to the American public and has engaged in an all-out sales job to members of his own party on Capitol Hill, imploring them to vote yes for reform.

"The president greatly regrets the delay," Gibbs said. "But passage of health care reform is of paramount importance, and the president is determined to see this battle through."

Gibbs announced last week that the White House expected health care reform to pass the House by Thursday and predicted Sunday that the Democrats' proposal would be "the law of the land" before Obama left for Asia this weekend.

After initially pushing back his departure to accommodate delays in the House's progress on the bill, the White House said Thursday that Obama will reschedule the entire trip for June.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

A big way for Health Care reform is to become healthier people. Let's stop keeping our people sick. We do this by eliminating so many drugs that cause so many side effects to trying to correct the cause of our illnesses and not just the symptoms. We need to get back to the basic and not making the drug industry rich. You go in with one problem and come out with many. Other countries are not as sick as we are. Give it a thought. There are other altermatives. We are hurting ourselves because we do not like the President. Be blessed
