Jim Greer, the former chairman of the Florida Republican party, is the subject of a state criminal investigation over allegations he benefited from soliciting donations to the GOP through a company he held a stake in, officials announced Wednesday.
Through a secretive contract with the Florida GOP, the company, Victory Strategies, was paid a 10 percent commission on major donor contributions to the party, The Orlando Sentinel
reported. Greer was a major stakeholder in Victory, the newspaper said.
Greer, a former city councilman, stepped down as state party chair in January amid accusations he misspent GOP money.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement did not identify Greer by name but said in a statement that it was investigating "possible criminal activity surrounding a former senior official of the Republican Party of Florida and Victory Strategies, LLC," Reuters
Greer has not commented on the charges but previously denied misspending party funds. When he announced his resignation two months ago, Greer, a moderate, blamed right-wing critics who he said have "turned their guns on fellow Republicans."
