Unemployment Benefits Expiring for Thousands on Monday

Benefits for thousands of unemployed Americans are set to expire Monday after Sen. Tom Coburn refused to vote last month for a unanimous-consent agreement to extend payments, CNN reports. The one-month extension bill would have cost $10 billion and is usually passed in emergency circumstances, but the Republican from Oklahoma withheld his support until the costs are offset.

Coburn complained that spending without money available would allow Congress to "borrow and steal from our kids."

Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) used the same tactic in February when he threatened to filibuster a previous unemployment extension bill that did not pay for itself. After a dramatic debate on the floor, Bunning struck a deal with Harry Reid and allowed the vote to proceed.

The Senate will take up the bill again when it reconvenes on April 12.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

i think it is really a shame that all the people sitting up there in their fine leather chairs and voting themselves a huge increase in salary for sitting there sleeping half the time but cannot consider the voters are the people that put them there. THEY CAN BE REPLACED. I am sure some of them will be.
