Texas Gov. Rick Perry Shot Coyote on Morning Jog, Saving Family Dog

Watch out, cowboy -- the governor of Texas packs heat when he takes his morning jog (just in case he has to plug a coyote or two).

Gov. Rick Perry told The Associated Press he gunned down one of those varmints in February when the coyote interrupted his morning run in the wide open spaces outside of Austin and threatened the family dog, which was with him on the jog. "I holler and the coyote stopped. I holler again. By this time I had taken my weapon out and charged it," Perry told the AP, referring to his .380 Ruger handgun. "It is now staring dead at me. Either me or the dog are in imminent danger. I did the appropriate thing and sent it to where coyotes go."

The governor downed the animal with the laser-sighted pistol, loaded with hollow-point bullets, leaving the critter in the dust where it fell. "He became mulch," Perry said.

A Republican running for his third term, Perry said he carries a handgun on some of his jogs because he fears snakes. The encounter brought to mind President Jimmy Carter's account of fending off a large, aggressive rabbit that threatened his rowboat in 1979. Carter, unarmed, used a paddle to fight off the attack bunny. Amused reporters dubbed it the "Banzai Bunny" and folk artist Tom Paxton wrote a satirical song about it called "I Don't Want a Bunny Wunny."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Big Bad Governor
I live in Las Vegas. We do have coyotes here. They have seen many of dog walkers.on our local trails. Never once did they ever come up to bother us or our dogs. If you yelled at them, they will run. Lucky for the Gov and his gun He might have run into Carters bunny.

Something not quite right about this story. First, a coyote is rather small and they are normally afraid of people. They tipically raid chicken houses and only catch other small prey like rabbits, etc...The last of the "great white hunters", Gov Perry does not appear to me to be...

Funny, the coyote that was in my horse pasture yesterday weighed about seventy or eighty pounds. I do know, it stepped right over the bottom board of my three board fence. That puts it's belly about 18 inches above the ground. It wasn't "rather small" at all.
According to my neighbor, they have been regularly killing 110 lb sheep on her farm, and also one of her sheep dogs.
I suppose you don't know much about coyotes. Perhaps you are thinking of foxes.
