Optimism among Republicans reached new heights Friday as House Minority Leader John Boehner predicted the GOP could win 100 additional seats in the November midterm elections. No Democrat is safe, he said.
Boehner (R-Ohio), in an interview with NPR, cited Sen. Scott Brown's victory in heavily Democratic Massachusetts as evidence that "there isn't a seat in America that Republicans cannot win." The party out of power at the White House typically gains ground in midterm balloting and pundits have estimated Republican gains in the U.S. House at 25 to 30 seats.
Boehner did not specify whether he was talking about victories in the House alone -- where all 435 seats are up for grabs -- or if he also included the Senate where one-third of the members must stand for reelection. Republicans would need a net gain of 41 seats to win back a majority in the House. "What we're seeing every day is the playing field widen -- widen beyond anything we've seen here in my 20 years," Boehner said in the radio interview. "At least" 100 seats are going to be in play in November, he predicted.
Once they regain the majority, Boehner said Republicans will move to repeal the new health care law and replace it "with common sense steps that will lower the cost of health insurance."
