The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has pushed public opinion back to the side of putting the priority on protecting the environment over stepping up development of energy supplies, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted May 24-25.

Fifty-five percent of those poll favor protection of the environment as the priority even if it means limiting the amount of energy supplies while 39 percent want more exploitation of energy sources even if it poses ricks to the environment.

In an early March poll, 50 percent wanted the priority to be more on energy production while 43 percent favored protection of the environment.

The change was most pronounced among Democrats and independents. In March, 58 percent of Democrats favored a priority on environmental protection while 51 percent of independents backed more energy production. In the new survey, 73 percent of Democrats now favor the priority being on environmental protection and 58 percent of independents agree.

Gulf oil spillThe position of Republicans remains the same as it was in March: 62 percent favor energy production while 30 percent put more importance on environmental protection.

What is disheartening is everyone in the Mineral Management Service who accepted "Gifts", a.k.a. "Bribes", have not had criminal charges filed against them. Even worse they haven't even been fired, and stripped of the pensions. What if the IRS employees were taking "Gifts" from those they audit? What if the SEC employees were taking "Gifts" from Wall Street firms? What if those who work for Social Security or the FBI started accepting "Gifts". This is a HUGE serious issue that our elected officials aren't really addressing, and the American people have taken notice. The whole entity of our government, not just our elected officials, are now in question. Let's be honest, this epic man made disaster in the end was caused by greed. Showmanship and cover-ups will not distract nor hide the truth.

No surprise here. The conservative have had thier way when it comes to the environment and energy. The GOP motto has been to let Americans burn as much gas as they want and let the oil companies do whatever they have to do to get it. " Drii baby drill "... Now they try to spin it by blaming others. WE KNOW WHO HAS BEEN ANTI-GOVERNMENT REGULATIONG AND OVERSIGHT. WE KNOW WHO HAS BEEN ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL. Environmentalist are the only ones that can say "I told you so".

Ban all off-shore drilling and continue with limited land drilling. At least with land drilling it can be contained to just that site, and when other forms of energy is in place, no more 'drill baby drill'. It is far too destructive having these oil spills in the water and spreading like wild fire destroying sea creatures.

It should be clear at this point in the Gulf oil disaster that science and technology are not up to speed on making offshore drilling a safe and controlled environment for the near future.
The spill should effectively shift the targets of exploration to onshore sites for decades. Judging from the results in polls in the above article, Republicans need to stop being politically motivated and look to bipartisan approaches in controlling and encouraging domestic oil production. The party of NO is once again on the wrong side of the issue. Republicans need to bend their knee, put their backward thinking on hold, and put the ecology of the US first in anything they support. Oil corporations are inherently profit oriented, can't be trusted with the public welfare as a primary interest, and need to be reigned in everything that they do. They are the enemy.

Oh really Mr. Expert.

So pray tell, what is the process that these evil oil corporations have to go to before they can even drill a well on private lands that they have already paid on average $600 per acre (most wells today are initially 640 acre-spaced) to even have the opportunity to drill anyways?

Do you know anything about it? Clearly not... If you did, you would know that the oil and gas industry is by far the most environmentally conscious, safe, regulated, responsible industry in the United States.

But that would require you knowing even the basics about it, so I guess we are at an impass here - you refuse to educate yourself with facts before calling the people who provide you with your comfortable life little demons - and I refuse to put up with your ridiculous accusations. Somethings gotta give...

I guess everyone will gladly give up all of their makeup, lip gloss, hair styling products, shoes, the heat in their homes, the light in their homes, their food products, their modes of transportation (yes, even bikes require oil (tires, oiling up the gears)), etc, etc.

The average person doesn't realize that pretty much everything they interact with daily is provided in part by fossil fuels.

Guess it will take, as the esteemed Mr. "Anthony Kight" would say, an event (failure of supply to meet demand) that leads to terrible consequences (economy crashing, people starving, cold, hot, industries halting, etc) for people to realize the plain and obvious in front of them.

Yes tmtee4four, it will, because what you don't seem to realise is that over 1/3rd of our oil (including imported oil) comes from offshore developement.

What you also fail to realise is that besides the new shale plays on shore, pretty much all major oil fields on land have been discovered and developed (except for those that are too precious to the migrating herds of wildlife in alaska).

What you also fail to realise is that "renewable" energy sources are not efficient and not plausible to take over any significant form of our energy product. Nor do they in any way shape or form meet the demands and requirements for transportation and physical products like those listed above.

So, in essence, we will either destroy the driving force of our own economy and INCREASE imports (thought you progressives were all about energy independence? Nah-that must have just been a claim to sound like you were center or in line with the right on a few things) or we will see such things as I have mentioned take place.

Sorry but the truth hurts sometimes doesn't it? Well-I guess you'd have to acknowledge the truth for it to hurt so in your case I'm not sure it's ever hurt.

There are alternative cosmetics, foods etc. that already don't use petroleum products. Some of us have - for many years - been researching ingredients and companies specifically to avoid petroleum products. And we are healthier for it. There are already many alternatives to petroleum products in everyday household goods, too, made by conscious small American companies who need your support, rather than the giant multinational oil companies.

In addition, we need to catch up with other countries who are already moving beyond petroleum addiction.

Learn all the pseudonyms for petroleum products and avoid them whenever possible. They're toxic in you cosmetics, your food and your environment. Here's a good place to start http://www.ehow.com/how_5736635_avoid-petroleum-based-products.html

Minimize driving gas fueled vehicles...hopefully American car companies will soon offer many more electric cars.

With just a little research, you can avoid many petroleum products.

Shopping is political. Vote with your dollars.

Not to worry. When gasoline goes up to over $5.00 per gallon and when people in the cold climate states start freezing in the dark oil drilling will become desirable again.

No, alternative energy will be more desirable again. Too bad Reagan destroyed our opportunity for clean fuel that Carter had in place. Geothermal, solar, wind and tides are the way to go! Burning fossil fuels will kill us all - and for what - GREED!

When gasoline prices increase to over $5.00 per gallon, intelligent people will support alternative and renewable energy sources, so that we do not have to primarily depend on ONE source for our energy needs. If the price increases for oil and we produce more oil, with the increased consumption from developing markets like China and India (which are HUGE), the oil we produce will have little to no impact to lower the cost of oil. We will STILL pay the (high) global market price. However, when we diversify to natural gas, nuclear, solar, wind, and other alternative and renewable energy sources, we will certainly be at an advantage- regarding cost and especially regarding our national security (not having to buy energy from unstable suppliers and our enemies).

Important to note that deep sea drilling is a direct result of bans on drilling on land brought about by environmentalist groups. This wouldn\'t have happened on land. Environmentalists are to blame.

Your ignorance is shown again!

"Record high profits" needs to be looked at in terms of a little economic indicator called "rate of return".

Considering the "rate of return" of the average oil and gas company is pretty much the same as the "rate of return" of the average "x-industry" (as in any industry) company, what "record profits" means is that the reason they are making "so much money" is because they are doing something called "investing" a lot of money.

By your logic, because of thier ROR, every successful company in the world, even silly things like Crocs (the shoe) are making RECORD PROFITS!!! and are therefore GREEDY! EVIL!!!

Learn basic economics before you cry like a little baby about other peoples success... in other words, abandon your progressive mindset and embrace reality.

For an administration whose Cap and Trade legislation was a high priority this deep water ecological disaster is a VERY HELPFUL CRISIS the global warmongers will not let go to waste.
