House Votes to Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

The House of Representatives voted 234 to 194 Thursday night to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the 17-year-old policy banning openly gay people from serving in the military.

Five House Republicans voted with the Democratic majority to lift the ban.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, "It is the right thing to do."

"The legislation, the compromise that was worked out at the White House, is respectful of the fact that there is a review going on, speaking at all levels to the military across the country and in theater about how we should go forward," she said.

Hours before the House vote, the Senate Armed Services Committee voted 16 to 12 to end the policy.

The amendment, sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and in the House by Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), stipulates that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy will be repealed only after the president, the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff certify that changing the law will not hurt the armed services' readiness, morale or cohesion. The Pentagon is studying those issues, with the results expected by the end of the year.

In the Senate, Susan Collins (R-Maine) crossed party lines to vote to repeal the policy, while Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) voted with the committee's Republicans to leave it in place. Webb, a Vietnam veteran, said this week that he wants to see the results of the military's study before deciding to change the law.

All of the Republicans on the committee except Collins and Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) took the unusual step of voting against the underlying Defense Authorization Act in protest of the plan to reverse "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Although the committee voted in a closed-door session, people familiar with the meeting said that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lieberman had a "heated discussion" about changing the policy. McCain argued that the Congress should heed the input of the military service chiefs, all of whom oppose changing the law now.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Would this government stop with the gay/not gay problem in the military? The fact is that the members of our military services are brave heroes that are out there willing to give up their lives defending our country, not to classify them for their sexual preference. They are to be applauded for their jobs, not criticized for their personal lives?

The U.S. military is not someone's social club. As a veteran I can tell you that we need to get back to business and quit these social experiments.

Yes this is awesome..there are many gay, lesbian and bi's in the military and many people know who those people are and respect them as a sailor and as part of the team. Being able to come in openly is not goingt o change how they act..they arent gonna start hitting on straight people. You all that say u dont wanna shower with them..well u already do. If the romans accepted gays way back when why are the people now so opposed? oh thats right the christian faith and sin bs...wll hate to break it to you but pagans were around first, we accept all people of sexual orientation or race..also many animals will have same gender sex..we are human but we are still part of nature..we are animals..gay is how u are born not a choice. McCain i am deeply disappointed...ur view on this policy is the one reason i didnt want u as president but i also didnt want Obama

There is a military code of conduct. It is against the rules to fraternize with other soldiers whether straight or gay. The code of conduct will remain intact. If there is an action of sexuality on the base whether hetero or homo disciplinary action will follow. I am a straight veteran who has no problem with gays serving openly.

ANYONE that wants to defend this great country that we live in by serving in the U.S. Armed Forces should be alowed too! This is their country too, whether homosexual or not. It is a right, and an honor! I served for 20 years and I couldnt tell you if I served with a "gay" individual or not...as long as they do their job that they were trained to do to the best of their ability and make no sexual advances towards their fellow servicemembers..then all is good! At least they are serving the country and not sitting on their fat butts like alot of the "anti-military" people are doing, and don't relize that without these people in the military, gay or not, that they wouldnt have the freedom to complain openly about this subject, or any other freedoms for that matter!

Lesbiens don't bother me much in the military; however, male homosexuals due have an increased sexual drive like all men due to testasterone (sp). Being in a barracks situation with men they are attracted to sexually is a real problem going foward for them and the straight guys who serve with them.

I think people are confused. Just because someone is gay does not mean they cross-dress. I'm a gay female, and I do not cross-dress. None of my gay male friends cross-dress either. Also, most cross-dressers are straight males. Us gays didn't want this repealed so we could make out in front of anyone - we wanted this repealed so this stupid witch hunt would end. If you don't remember, most of the gay men and women recently "outed" by the military was done while they were off the bases.
I'm glad that this finally passed! My girlfriend was thinking about going into the military, and now she can finally serve without having to HIDE our relationship from the ENTIRE world.

homosexuals should not be allowed into the military !!!! Once found out, they should be kicked out of the service to enjoy their unchristian activities outside the military arena.

Does your statement mean that only Christians should serve in the U.S. military? Should we not allow Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, wiccans, pagans, agnostics - or God forbid - atheists to openly serve in the military? If this indeed is your statment, then "they should be kicked out of the service to enjoy their unchristian activities outside the military arena". I'm just sayin'...
