President Obama said earlier this week he would send up to 1,200 Guard troops to back up Border Patrol agents in the battle to block drug smuggling and control illegal entries. That wasn't enough for McCain, who is in a contentious Republican primary campaign against former Rep. J.D. Hayworth for his Senate seat in Arizona. He said 3,000 troops were needed just to help safeguard his own state, the Associated Press reported.
But the 54 votes backing his effort to add the deployment to a spending bill were short of the 60 he needed to force a vote on final passage of his amendment. The Senate also refused to go along with a second amendment authorizing more than $2 billion in additional spending for border security.

McCain once supported immigration reform that offered a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, provided that they met certain conditions. But as violence flared along the border he became an advocate for Arizona's new law that authorizes police to stop and question anyone they suspect is in the country illegally.
"The borders are broken," the AP quoted McCain as saying. "We have an obligation to our citizens to secure our border and allow them to lead lives where they not live in fear."
Former President George W. Bush began the policy of using National Guard troops to supplement border security. At his news conference Thursday, Obama said the additional troops would help with intelligence gathering and stopping drug and human trafficking along the border. He continued to push for broader immigration legislation. "We have to have a comprehensive approach to immigration reform," the president said.
The only thing we really need to do is legalize anybody who enters the usa across the border, after all our country is based on immagration from around the world... so why do we block those people who would like to enhance our gross profit by making them come across the border illegally? When the answer is to make them citizens & then they can pay taxes like the rest of the citizens here! Freedom of life liberty & the pursuit of happiness to all people I say!! Native American Indian citizen is my ancestry so... LOVE Thy Neighbor as you would love yourself... Just Be Nice To Everyone! :)

But they can't find all of these huge corporations that are hiring and paying slave wages to illegals. Because they don't exist. This is just the villain of choice for this agenda.
May 27 2010 at 7:23 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyHow come after decades of allowing illegals in the country the problem is worse now than 50 years ago? If the government goes after businesses and individuals who hire them criticism will be that governement is interfering and too broad. What should happen is hefty fines be imposed on people hiring illegals to work anywhere in the country. Hit people in the pocketbook or the wallet and the problem will stop.
Drug cartels use illegals because they have access to areas where people have come in for decades. No one would stay if they did not find work, even work without benefits, job security or a health plan. If it cost about 10,000.00 per person when companies or individuals are discovered hiring undocumented employees, it would stop very quickly. Laws permitting police to check a person's documents has always been the case. Who has been checking for the past 50 years and found no one?
If John McCain's ideas made any sense he would have won the presidency twice already.

May 27 2010 at 5:43 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyThis story, starting with its headline, was clearly written in an effort to once again portray the Republicans in a negative light. I have been paying very close attention to all of the news reports and interviews related to this particular story. This specific story is worded in such a way to suggest that its author has an agenda.
McCain asked for 6,000 troops at the border, Obama responded with his own plan to hire 1,200 people to work at DESK JOBS to enhance border security. NO TROOPS ARE BEING SENT TO PATROL THE BORDER. This is Obama politics at its finest. He has to take some sort of action to appease the 70% + Americans who want to enhance border security without pissing off the immigrants and pro-asylum nuts who want to let all these criminals (YES...THEY ARE ALL CRIMINALS...EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WHO CROSSED OUR BORDERS ILLEGALLY) stay here while we foot the bill to provide them with free medical care, food stamps, housing assistance, legal assistance,...you know, all of those things that most LEGAL American citizens aren't entitled to. Had it not been for the national/international attention drawn by Arizona's new laws to enforce the existing and unenforced Federal laws on immigration, Obama would still be doing exactly what he was doing before to enhance security at our borders....NOTHING!
It has become increasingly obvious that there is a faction in this country that will not be satisfied until our borders are essentially non-existent. The laws are on the books, but the people running Washington at this time simply do not want to enforce them. I have a feeling that the election coming in November is going to be a political blood-bath. But I wonder if that will be enough to safeguard our national soverignty, or will it be too little and too late.
