Obama's Thursday Press Conference: A Rare and Strategic Event

President Obama's East Room press conference on Thursday is a relatively rare occurrence in his presidency. Obama called the daytime event -- at 12:45 p.m. Eastern time -- as the crisis over the BP oil spill is deepening.

While the president does plenty of one-on-one interviews with journalists, often knowing ahead of time there will be a focus on a single topic, taking questions from a podium from an assortment of reporters is not a communications format the White House message team favors.

At his last East Wing press conference -- a prime-time event on July 22, 2009 -- Obama created a distraction for his agenda when he was asked about a confrontation between a Cambridge, Mass., police officer and a black Harvard professor: Sgt. James Crowley had arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., a noted African-American-studies scholar, six days earlier. Obama triggered an uproar when he said, "The Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home."

Since then 22, Obama has had only a few solo press conferences:

-Sept. 25, in Pittsburgh at the G-20 summit.
-Dec. 18, in Copenhagen at the Climate Change summit.
-Feb. 9, in the White House briefing room, a daytime event with no advance notice.
-April 13 in Washington, at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation summit.

"Obama knows what his strength is, and his strength is speaking in depth on a topic, on a particular issue. His interest is in doing [in-depth] interviews," Towson University Professor Martha Joynt Kumar told Politics Daily on Thursday morning.

Kumar, a specialist in presidential communication and the media, keeps detailed statistics on presidential press conferences. There are two main categories: solo events, where it is just the president taking questions, and joint, most often a president with a foreign leader.

At this point in his presidency, here's how Obama compares to former presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. According to Kumar, as of May 20 in each of the four administrations:

-Obama has had 32 press conferences, 13 solo and 19 joint.
-George W. Bush had 30 press conferences, five solo and 25 joint.
-Bill Clinton had 57 press conferences, 18 solo and 39 joint.
-George H.W. Bush had 47 press conferences, 35 solo and 12 joint.

There is another type of presidential exchange with the press -- the shouted question by a pool reporter at an event in or out of the White House. Kumar's statistics show how Obama has resisted engaging in this format, declining to take questions in an informal setting, compared to the three presidents before him. So far, Obama in informal sessions has taken questions 56 times; George W. Bush, 186 times; Clinton, 332 times and George H.W. Bush, 78 times.

"All presidents recognize they have to deal with reporters," Kumar said. But they like to "deal from their strengths."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Ah, what was all the whining about? This new commenting policy is in effect now, and it appears you\'re all able to still complain about the President of the United States.
Maybe this issue, just like many others, you\'ll come to realize that you just over reacted.

Help me! Help me! The sky is falling!

Oh I guess calling the President a narcissist was offensive to PD and AOL??? Is this country becoming a big brother consortium?? If this is the long awaited comment changes we were promised how dissappointing. What a joke!!!!

Where is my statement AOL? No curse words, no racism, whats the deal? How long after we post does it take for an EDITOR to clear an opinion??

Typical Obama immediate response, have meeting to discus political options and spins. Decide who and how to place the blame. Have more meetings to decide who will do what and make tentative gesture of sending out the Coast Guard who can do nothing about spill, but make appearance of the government doing something.

Speaking for 17 minutes to answer a simple question is a strength?? It\'s more a sign of insecurity and lack of focus. Note how he over emphasizes words. That a characteristic of people who don\'t want to be challenged on what they say.

From whom exactly will he be facing these \'tough questions\'? Clearly not the vast majority of the media who seems intent on protecting him and spinning to accommodate his flailing presidency.

Time and time again has shown the only time he gets \'tough questions\' is when journalists are forced to do so by public outcry.

Let\'s face it. America is growing very weary and wary of President Obama\'s \'presidency by media events\'. The vast majority of his days seem spent attending media events and photo ops instead of at the Oval Office working. I for one would like to see a lot less of his daily media-hopping and much more REAL and competent results.

I don\'t ascribe to the notion that this press conference and the possible success in stopping the oil leak are somehow related. I do however find it interesting that Obama\'s first press conference in 10 month\'s is held in the afternoon just before the start of a long holiday weekend. one would think that such a rare and important occurance would occur in prime time so as to garner the most possible viwership. It will be interesting to see if he becomes \"prickly\" at questions he does not like. will he continue to follow a predetermined list in calling on reporters? will his answer\'s approximate a filibuster there by limiting the number of questions asked? how many times will he blame the \"previous administration\" directly or tacitdly? We shall see. Let\'s hope the American people receive much deserved answers/information from POTUS concerning the multitude of problems facing our Nation.

Someone needs to explain to him what \"transparency\" means.

Not being a believer in coincidence, I find it highly suspect that on the day the President may be facing some tough questions regarding the Suspeckgate , there appears to be good news concerning the BP fiasco.
