Inside the Guantanamo Detention Facility: A Slideshow Look

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba -- Today, 181 prisoners remain at Guantanamo Bay detention camp, despite the Obama administration's initial pledge to close the facility by this past January.
The administration plans to move some detainees to the Thomson Correctional Center in northern Illinois. The rest have either received a recommendation for release from the Department of Justice or would be transferred overseas. But the planning process has been slowed by the need to get congressional funding for the purchase of the new facility and by complaints from human rights groups. They argue that relocation will not alleviate concerns about the legality of detaining terrorist suspects indefinitely without trial or the use of military commissions to prosecute some of them.
While the administration wrestles with the future of Guantanamo, it has made an effort to improve both the conditions in the camp and the public's perception of it. Newly branded as "safe, humane, legal, transparent" by the Department of the Defense, some of the facilities feature communal living, television, and language classes for prisoners. However access to sections of the facility, such as Camp 7, where some high value detainees are being held, remains extremely limited.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I believe it was wrong of the President NOT to release the photos of the treatment that was given to prisoners in our name---remember everything that was done was done by every single American-- after WW11 ALL Germans had to take responsibility for what Hitler did. All Americans need to take responsibility. After all it was sanctioned by those in power at the time.

Really enjoyed the audio slideshow, but couldn't help hearing the irony as the general discussed the "openness" in the design of Guantanamo Bay, of all places.

It's a miracle he's gotten ANYTHING done, with the unmitigated determination on the part of the GOP to block every single thing he's tried to do from the very beginning.
