While waiting outside, the press pool witnessed a standoff of sorts between the Secret Service and security force of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan's security force. Farrakhan lives across the street from Nesbitt. Why is this a 'stand off'? I like Lynn Sweet but i don't see an issue here. I rembember that it was sweet who asked Prsident Obama what he thought of Professor Gates' arrest. I often wondered if the would have ask Prez Bush the same question.

June 01 2010 at 9:58 AM Report abuse Permalink -18 rate up rate down ReplyI lives 4 blocks from the President and just feet away from Farakhan on woodlawn and I had no idea any of this was going on. A friend emailed me the article that lives in Georgia and I explained to him the Media has to much time on there hands. It's Silly to think the Secret Service would have a standoff with Farakhan's Guards or anyone else when it comes to the President and his security. What a waste of ink and to think all he wanted to do in enjoy a good old home cook Barbeque in town with his family and friends. Whatever Man!

International organizations active in Gaza paint a bleaker picture. A United Nations Development Program report published on Sunday determined that about three-quarters of the damage caused by Israel’s military offensive in Gaza in the winter of 2008-9 had not yet been repaired. And a report by the United Nations humanitarian coordinator blamed the blockade for “suffocating” the agricultural sector in Gaza and said that insufficient food was now a problem in more than 60 percent of households.”
I will not comment on any remarks made bt the president on memorial day, being i haven't seen them yet...however, if i were president i might be inclined to pay my respects to a lone soldier, airman, sailor or marine buried in a small plot somewhere that doesn't recieve due recognition. I don't view the idea of paying respects somewhere other than arlington as disgraceful or disrespectful. Signed CPL MRD USMC 1993-1997

How is this backyard bbq going to fly with the military...not very well. I am a veteran and still maintain ties with many of my active duty friends. Without exception we consider this to be a very troubling action. When your commander in chief doesn't care enough to honor our fallen it sends a very bad message." First of all, VP Biden went to Arlington instead of the President. Secondly, I heard on the radio that all of the recent presidents missed at least one Memorial Day Ceremony @ Arlington. At least the president observed the holiday by saluting the war dead @ the cemetary in Chicago. GIVE THE MAN A BREAK!!
May 31 2010 at 4:31 PM Report abuse Permalink +11 rate up rate down ReplyI live in Chicago, and this was on the news about the Obama's BBQ. Their was no standoff this report is just trying to rise out of people. It seems that it has work. I live 6 blocks away and it's no big deal. Today is the day The President makes his speech (Monday) not Saturday. Let's use our time by prayer for our soldiers and not making something out of nothing. My son who is serving and other get tried of unneccessary comments about what the President should and should not be doing. Let the General in command comment what the President is doing.
May 31 2010 at 3:24 PM Report abuse Permalink -4 rate up rate down ReplyWhy isn't he placing a wreath at the grave of the unknown soliders that gave their lives for us, like every president before him has done. That is a slap in the face to all active and retired military. He calls himself an American that supports our military, I don't think so. To all the Men and Women that made the ultimate sacrifice for your service to our country and giving us FREEDOM, You are forever in our hearts and we SALUTE you.
May 31 2010 at 12:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWas there an American Flag flying in the front of those homes in honor of Memorial Day? That's what I want to know.
May 31 2010 at 11:09 AM Report abuse Permalink +28 rate up rate down ReplyMy husband served in the AF and Gulf War, and while putting the flag out this morning, the bracket snapped. So no flag for us - does that mean he instantly became un-American even after he served his country so proudly? Do you make exceptions for the infirm or elderly who cannot hoist a flag or for those who have no place to fly a flag? What exactly do you want to know?
