Gulf Oil Spill: Federal Government to Launch Criminal Investigation

Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday announced that the federal government would launch a criminal investigation into the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and the resulting oil spill -- the largest in U.S. history.

Following travel to the Gulf to meet with regional state attorneys general, Holder said the investigation will involve the FBI and other federal agencies. "If we find evidence of illegal behavior, we will be forceful in our response," he said during a press conference.

President Obama has faced withering criticism in the last weeks for a lack of progress in stopping the leak -- now in its 40th day and estimated to be releasing 12,000 to 19,000 gallons of oil per day. After nearly five weeks of largely conciliatory back-and-forth between BP management and the White House, the president signaled a more aggressive approach following a meeting Tuesday with former Sen. Bob Graham and former EPA Administrator William K. Reilly, the co-chairs of a national commission tasked with investigating the spill and making recommendations to prevent future disasters. Graham and Reilly will be joined by five other appointees, including "leaders in science and engineering," whom Obama said he would announce "very soon." The commission is expected to release its findings in the next six months.

"If the laws on our books are insufficient to prevent such a spill, the laws must change. If oversight was inadequate to enforce these laws, oversight has to be reformed," the president said. "If our laws were broken, leading to this death and destruction, my solemn pledge is that we will bring those responsible to justice on behalf of the victims of this catastrophe and the people of the Gulf region."

Obama also reiterated protective measures the White House has taken since the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion on April 20, including splitting the Minerals Management Service into separate departments (one tasked with licensing and regulation, and the other in charge of handling royalties from oil and gas), and a six month moratorium on deep water drilling permits, announced in a press conference last Friday.

The president's remarks came three days after BP announced its latest effort to stop the oil leak, a maneuver known as a "top kill," had failed. BP is now pursuing a secondary strategy which involves placing a containment dome over the well head and using a funnel to siphon off the oil flow. Previous attempts at using a containment dome failed, but BP officials have said that they have resolved some of the issues leading to the failure, and remain cautiously optimistic that this new

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Holder is going to prosecute to the fullest extent. Does this include Elizabeth Birnbaum who was the head of MMS na dwas first hired by the Clinton Administration, let go by Bush , rehired by the Obama Administration and knows nothing about Oil? Birnbaum has been in place this time with Obama for eighteen months during a time when workers of the MMS were accepting gifts from the Oil companies. Apparently she didnt learn anything during the Clinton adminstration. You are seeing the result of decades of appointments of Political hacks and lax regulation. Obama was going to be different and run the most Ethical and Transparent Government and Pelosi was going to have the moat Ethical Congress. It got worse. Hurricane season started today in the Gulf of Mexico and fifty percent of the Oil Rigs are located in the Gulf. China has signed an agreement with Cuba for deep water drilling. What is this Government going to do if China has a similar problem a since China doesnt have the expertise? BP has alreadt paid over 350 miilion in claims and the cap is 75 miilion so Holder talking about filing Criminal charges is pathetic when ther eis no evidence. Why did Obama recently cut the budget of the U.S. Coast Guard?Mean while the people of Louisiana are suffering and even Carville has admonished the Government and after four weeks Obama takes off for three hours which is about three holes of Golf to talk to them.

They launched a criminal investigation and there are no charges to date (hence the investigation). Investigate, identify the criminal activity, prosecute. That's how it goes.

I have a novel idea. Why not fix the problem FIRST, then conduct a criminal investigation?

And so continues Obama's endless quest for scapegoats. He has an almost religious passion for blaming people for things.

For me, taking an agressive stance is coming up with a solution to getting this leak stopped. Too much time in front of the camera showing the world who's big brother. Problem solving takes a back seat and people are suffering a horrible loss.

When this crisis is over, we should definitely investigate to see if laws were broken, but right now the gulf coast needs a President, not a lawyer.
