Job Growth Surged in May, but Most Was Due to Temporary Census Hires

The economy added 431,000 jobs last month, pushing the unemployment rate down a little, but the government was responsible for most of the new hires as it brought on temporary workers for the massive U.S. Census effort.

The jobless rate fell to 9.7 percent from 9.9 percent in April, the Labor Department said.

President Obama said the May report showed the economy is moving in the right direction and the "policies we put in place are working." The recovery is still in its early stages, he said, but is "getting stronger by the day."

Payrolls rose for the fifth consecutive month, with May's numbers marking the largest increase in non-farm employment in a single month in a decade, the New York Times said. But only 41,000 of the new jobs were in the private sector and most of the federal government hires were for Census work that will evaporate after the summer months.

Analysts anticipated the Census balloon, but even allowing for it they expected 540,000 new jobs overall in May, the Times said. Manufacturing, mining, the service industry and temps were responsible for most of the private sector growth, according to the Labor Department.

Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Adivisers, said the figures showed "continued signs of labor market recovery." But the high unemployment and slowdown in private sector job growth emphasize the need for targeted action "to spur private sector job creation" and also to prevent layoffs of state and local government workers, she said.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Maybe we should just all become census takers. Than the SEIU could organize us all as a union. We could demand more money, tenure, better benefits, and first class tickets to Greece.

Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Adivisers, said the figures showed "continued signs of labor market recovery."----If this is their definition of a recovery, I would hate to see what a recession looks like.

A recession is when the economy shrinks for two successive quarters.

I saw on a financial show yesterday where a Census worker claimed that she was hired and then let go and was rehired again for a total of four times. Each time she was hired it counted as a new job so this one person counted for five increases in employment. I am sure that she was not the only one. A Regional Census director verified this was a normal practice. There were 44,000 private jobs created. The article doesnt mention that 244,000 were created last month and that 100,000 jobs need to be created in the private sector each and every month to sustain the rate so forget about it.The Government doesnt count you as unemployed unless you are unemployed and have actively been seeking work for the last four weeks. The Unemployment rate went from 9.9% to 9.7% because 320,000 people had stopped looking for work because there is little work available.if you count all the unemployed then the average is 17% and has been at that level for at least a year.

Saw the program you are referring to........census worker also said that since she cannot file for employment benefits while the government hires, and rehires her, this also gives a false picture of the unemployment numbers. On one hand, they inflate the "new hires" by counting one person over and over, and on the other hand, they falsly present the true unemployed numbers. It is soooooooooo wrong for the government to manipulate the truth in this way. Do they think the American people do not know what is happening to their relatives, friends, neighbors? It is beginning to feel like I tumbled into Wonderland, with Alice.

Now that Obama has placed a moratorium on oil drilling in deep waters thousands of oil field workers will lose their jobs . The environmentalists will welcome this news though. I wonder how the next jobs report will look.

The Obama administration touted job growth back in December when the malls needed all those Santa Clauses too.

"Policies we put in place are working" --- true. No lie (for once). It's working just like they wanted ---- destroy private sector jobs; increase government jobs......make people dependent on the Govn't more and more and then they'll have more votes from them to make sure the entitlements, etc. stay...........slowly bringing in their radical Socialistic/Marxist agenda.

Obama's Job "Stimulus Package" mostly went to the Government sector....Many economists commented at that time .........that more of the private sector should have had been stimulated......... which would be more lasting than creating more Government related jobs ... such as building infrastructure...like roads, bridges, and buildings.....because when these structures are completed.... the customers go away.....................The private sector was mostly ignored and the investments necessary to keep people at more lasting work never came to pass....That's why the unemployment rate now at 9.7% ........will only go higher once the 500,000 temporary census workers are finished with the 2010 census in August/September.

What's worse being unemployed or knowing you're going to have to work your tail off to pay for all this spending for entitlement programs? I think I'm going to grab my fishing pole my rifle and a bag of corn seed and move to the mountains. I know I can survive there.
