Public Increasingly Seeing Obama as Responsible for the Economy

More Americans than a year ago see President Obama's policies as having an impact on the state of the economy and the percentage who believe those policies have made things worse has nearly doubled since then, according to a Pew Research/National Journal poll conducted June 3-6.

In June 2009, 53 percent of Americans said that Obama's economic program had not impacted the economy or that it was too soon to tell. But in the new survey, that number is down to 38 percent.

At the same time, the percentage of those who say Obama's policies have made things worse climbed from 16 percent a year ago to 29 percent. Twenty-three percent said his policies had made things better compared to 26 percent last June.

Independents are less likely than Republicans or Democrats to say Obama has had an impact on the economy. Forty-seven percent say his policies have had no effect or it is too soon to judge, compared to 54 percent a year ago. But the percentage of independents who said the policies had made things worse jumped from 16 percent to 26 percent, while those saying they had made things better fell from 28 percent last June to 19 percent.

Forty-seven percent of Democrats say Obama's policies have improved the economy and 11 percent say they had made it worse, with the rest falling into the "no effect" or undecided categories.

Forty-eight percent believe the economy will take a long time to recover, 37 percent say it will recover soon and 13 percent say it is recovering now.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Hey, rbji345, isn't it OBAMA who's LOOSENING the immigration policies? Americans had plenty of well paying jobs before he took office and darned near tore down the border fences!

The economy want get better until the Republicans, Democrates, and Independents work together to help us. People are going to blame Obama for the economy, when it was Messed up when Bush was in the White house. He was the one who let the ball go. The sad part to me is that we have men and women who fight to protect stupid people and I'm starting to question why, because there is nothing United about our country. During the election and now people have proved that.

Hey, I have an idea. Lets hand the keys back to the very people that drove the car into the ditch. Lets also turn a blind eye to total de-regulation, no over sight and lets forget all about Wall Street and the Gulf. Lets forget about Health Care and how about we artificially re-inflate the housing market again? Yes, thats the ticket and will fix everything for you instant gratification, poltically impotent ideologs.

yes and Im sure everything would be perfect had McCain and Palin been elected. That is the reality of the right wing disconnect. Nothing would be better and everything would be worse.

McCain could not have done any worse than Obama and his Obama-crats have. Democrats promised us change, and they want to tax what little spare CHANGE they jave left us.

There is not one source [expert] out there that hasn't said this economy is turning around. Jobs are going to be the last to improve. And quite frankly, we're weathering this storm pretty well. The stadiums are still full, gas is low for now, and none of our taxes have increased. And I'm guessing most of you aren't missing any meals or doing without the necessities. Now, compare that to the rest of the world. We're all humans, you know? I think I'll remain optimistically grateful for things being as good as they are. It was going to be much, much worse.

Obama's feet need to be held to the fire until this economy turns around. Union Bosses are lobbying Congress to bailout the Union pensions. Theses pensions have been underfunded for decades. In unrelated news, Union Bosses have pledged $200,000,000 to help Democrats keep control of Congress. Wouldn't that money be better spent on shoring up their member's pensions instead of supporting Democrats/Obama and their 10% unemployment policies?

Despite my intense dislike for our current POTUS, the economic downturn is not his fault. However, much like FDR, he suffers from the misguided notion that the government can fix everything. If history teaches us anything at all, it is that the government creates more problems than it solves. During the 1930s, FDR wasted billions in short-term schemes, only to find that unemployment at the end of the decade was virtually unchanged.

Obama's stimulus is an abject failure, and could well be blamed for extending the recession - much like FDR's fantasy ride. Small businesses still cannot obtain loans, and without small business there will be no recovery. If Obama really wants to end this slide, he should go back to Congress and have them re-designate remaining funds for small business.

But I actually think he wants to extend the crisis - since no crisis should ever be wasted. In a twisted sense, he seems to think that the economic downturn will facilitate his devotion to establishing a Socialist nightmare here - even though it has failed everywhere else in the world. For a supposedly pretty smart guy, he needs to read more history.

In the end, every voter needs to remember him - so that we never again elect a president without any semblance of experience. We seem to have forgotten the disaster known as Jimmy Carter. We can never forget Obama.

You are so very right to compare to FDR however, I disagree about the economy is not his fault. I agree the economy was bad when he arrived in office but, he has added so much debt to the economy. I would agree all Americans dislikes poverty and truly wants all people have modern conveniences but, the social programs to not do this. They hand out money and if is spent on many things rather up grading their convenience.

The government should help all small business to create jobs. Every person should have the opportunity to work and bring home money to his or her family.
Their self worth is very important. Hand outs in my opinion make you feel like you did at home when you became a teen ager. Only received what mama and daddy
thought they could affort and same with the goverment. Only enough money to last the next week.

People who succeed in making money (however their hearts dictates) learn from their employeers and then venture into their own business( which the government should help to happen). Then you as owner of a business will have to work harder than ever you thought possible. You will have to work 15 to 20 hrs. a day, ever day and lucky if you see your family. BUT, you will succeed beyond your relief.

Is anyone keep track of all of the USA companies who are laying off employees in the USA and sending jobs out of theo country? I just read in the newspaper that Hewlett Packard is laying off 6,000 employees and sending the jobs overseas. And you wonder why the economy is getting worse. People who are not working do not pay taxes and they do not purchase items.
