Retail Sales Slump in May; Biggest Drop in Eight Months

Retail sales fell by 1.2 percent in May, the steepest decline in eight months as consumers with tight pocketbooks cast doubt on the strength of the economic recovery.

The Commerce Department said a falloff in automobiles sales -- down 1.7 percent -- was a big part of the slowdown. It was the worst month since a 2.2 percent dip in sales last September, the AP said.

Because consumer spending amounts to 70 percent of overall economic activity, the weak showing along with stubbornly high unemployment and tumbling stock prices gave little cheer to the Obama administration, which continues to forecast a steady, if slow, recovery.

Total sales for the month were $362.5 billion -- 6.9 percent above spending in May 2009, during the depths of the recession.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I predict people will continue to hold back on spending because they are worried about how much our taxes are going to go up when the Bush Tax Cuts are stopped.

I predict the Democrats will call for more Federal spending, higher taxes, more Federal employees, and entitlement expansions.

I thought we were supposed to be abandoning the "failed policies of the past".
