Obama and British PM Cameron in Friendly Chat on Oil Spill and BP Role

In the wake of his withering criticism of BP for its handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, President Barack Obama spoke with British Prime Minister David Cameron for a half-hour Saturday and apparently assured him that his widely reported comments were not meant as a slap at Great Britain.

At least that was the take on the private telephone conversation as relayed by Cameron's Downing Street office in London. Obama, in a recent television interview, said he wasn't consulting with experts about the disastrous oil spill as a college seminar exercise, but "so I know whose ass to kick." He has also referred to the oil company by its old name, British Petroleum, though it is now an international corporation that goes by the handle BP PLC. Obama jumped on BP for its flawed response to the mess in the gulf -- the consequence of an April 20 rig explosion that blew out a well which is still spewing oil -- and for a recent PR campaign meant to buck up the company's tarred image.
President Obama on phone at White House
The broadsides reportedly created a backlash in Britain where BP is a household name and millions of citizens depend on dividends and pension funds from the company. Cameron's office said Obama told the prime minister his "frustrations about the oil spill had nothing to do with national identity" and that he "had no interest in undermining BP's value." The White House "readout" on that issue was briefer, saying "the president and prime minister discussed the impact of [the] tragic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, reiterating that BP must do all it can to respond effectively to the situation."

It was the first substantive conversation between the leaders since Obama phoned Cameron on May 22 with congratulations on his becoming prime minister. They also discussed Afghanistan, the U.N. sanctions on Iran and the upcoming G-8 summit in Toronto. And they made a puzzling bet on the World Cup soccer match between the United States and Britain -- "the best lager against the best beer in America." But most American beer is "lager," while the Brits prefer darker ales and porter. The game ended in a tie, so we may never know who would have won what.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. It went like this - "I screwed the pooch from the get-go and now I need some cover. If BP promises to keep the campaign money coming, I'll dial down the idiotic, childish blame game."

How about BP is ordered to charge only $1.00 per gallon of gas in Southeastern US for the next 10 years.

Okay now here we go, BP offers funds to help the Gulf Coast residents on their own.
Now the Government comes in to force BP to do something they already have chosen to do. Watch out where will the money end up, Washington? I see trouble ahead for the people who really need the funds.

You might not intended to undermine BP's value, but your "ass kicking" ways sure did! Please you and rest of the clowns in Washington, SHUT the hell up and let BP do the job they stated they would do.

All the comments so far miss a few basic but important points.
1. The rig that blew up, the poor people that died before the rig sank, The rig was owned by an American drilling company Oceanic, the people who died were there employees. The 7 safety steps that failed were put in place by Oceanic. BP is trying to stop an American Tragedy caused by an American company subcontracted to BP (a condition of the drilling and exploration licences) BP are getting it in the neck not because of their own screw up but because they own the rights.
2.When a President speaks the way Obama is speaking, "kick ass" "I would fire him" These are not the way to get anything done,he is the leader of the free world acting like a lynch party from the deep south. Crazy way for the top worlds politician to act.
3. BP has stepped up to the Plate, has dug deep and will honor its comitments.
4. Does anyone seriously think the people trying to stop this arent trying to STOP this?
5. All Obama has achieved with his rhetoric against BP is estrange the people of our closest and most supportive allied country, The Brits. Obama might say to Prime Minister Cameron " I am not Brit bashing" but there are 60 million people over there who no longer believe him and are asking why are our soldiers dying to support this idiot (Their words are stronger than that)
Finally If one of the most serious and dedicated Oil companies with the experience available to them cant get this under control then the White house certainly aint going to manage it.

Can anyone tell me what adminstration allowed off shore drilling in the first place? It's madness. It is a perfect example of man's arrogance and complete lack of respect for nature. The despersment chemicals being used to clean up the oil look like food to the fish. The fish eat the chemicals and we eat the fish. The long term health care cost alone is going to be immeasurable. I can't imagine if we had more that 1 leak to deal with. It has to stop, it's insane.

Has anyone thought about the timing of the oil spill and that of the president authorizing drilling?? It seems to be too close to call. There are people in this country and world that have there own agendas and that will go to ANY lengths to get their point accross. Just giving YOU something to think about. BP and ALL the other OIL Companies accross the globe do not want this type of publicity and loss opf life and profits. Think of what was said about ALL the saftey devices that ALL FAILED at the same time. NO ONE IN GOVERNMENT WANTS A PANIC ON THEIR HANDS> NO ONE HAS MENTIONED THIS EVEN AS SPECULATION.

Obama was using a political reasons instead of trying to stop this oil spill, such a loser this president is.

Calling for a boycott is pretty stupid. Obama is looking for someone to blame, as usual; and Bush is not believable.
Let them drill in shallow water and this would never have happened.
