Pro-Life and Pro-Woman: Sarah Palin's Case for Authentic Feminism

The following op-ed by Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, is in answer to a Politics Daily opinion piece that ran last week.

In her piece entitled, "Sarah Palin: Embracing Feminism, or Co-Opting it for Conservatives?" Frances Tobin continues the conversation about who is allowed to define feminism and how the label should be applied. We welcome this discussion and agree that it is a "good thing" to engage in this robust debate. Ms. Tobin, however, fails to directly rebut the arguments we have made.

For years, many feminists have told women facing a crisis pregnancy that the only way to continue a successful life is to have an abortion. Ms. Tobin mentions Sarah Palin's comments at the Susan B. Anthony List's Celebration of Life Breakfast: "...feminist groups want to try to tell women... that no, you're not capable of doing both. You can't give your child life and still pursue career and education. You're not strong enough. You're not capable." Palin argues that this point of view is the antithesis of authentic feminism as it minimizes rather than encourages the full ability of women to embrace both motherhood and career.

Susan B. AnthonyTo bolster her case that feminism rejects the pro-life position, Ms. Tobin quotes an opinion by Lynn Sherr and Ann Gordon, "experts" on Susan B. Anthony and early suffragettes. They argue that Susan B. Anthony spent "no time on the politics of abortion" and that to say otherwise is "empty talk."

What is remarkable is that neither Sherr nor Gordon make any attempt to link pro-abortion rights sentiment to the early suffragettes. After all, if being pro-choice is central to being pro-woman, wouldn't at least one suffragette have made that point? Rather, they try to deconstruct the significant evidence that early suffragettes across the board saw abortion as a direct affront to womanhood.

Conveniently, Ms. Tobin ignores our response in the Washington Post blog On Faith, where we point to numerous writings from Susan B. Anthony herself and her fellow feminists that show they did talk about protecting the unborn -- and frequently.

You can read the response here, quoting Victoria Woodhull, the first female presidential candidate, who told a newspaper of the day that "Every woman knows that if she were free, she would never bear an unwished-for child, nor think of murdering one before its birth." (Wheeling, West Virginia Evening Standard, November 17, 1875)

While Ms. Tobin holds that what she calls truth "is probably too inconvenient for Palin and those who fill out her anti-abortion cohort," perhaps she can come up with the first shred of evidence of Susan B. Anthony agreeing with her pro-abortion rights fervor.

Early founders of the feminist movement like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who fought for the right of women to vote, also paved the way for women like Sarah Palin to enter public life. They celebrated the notion that women bring a unique perspective to public policy.

Women can be -- and are -- increasingly strong political actors who reject the liberal ideology of abortion-on-demand. The dramatic victories of Sharron Angle in Nevada and Carly Fiorina in California in two high profile Senate primaries are just the most recent examples.

At the heart of the matter is the fact that "feminists" like Ms. Tobin, insist upon one thing: feminism, whatever else it might entail, must include virtually unqualified support for abortion rights.

What gives them the authority to insist that there is a pro-abortion rights requirement for feminism? Certainly not majority opinion. Polling proves that women as well as men are moving in a pro-life trajectory. Certainly not the political positions of women seeking to lead this country, such as Angle and Fiorina. There has been an explosion of strong successful pro-life women candidates. Certainly it can't be found in the writings of the early suffragettes. The response of Tobin, Sherr and Gordon is, at best, that they aren't nearly as pro-life as you portray them. These liberal feminists never show any proof that the early suffragettes approved of abortion, a practice that Susan B. Anthony herself called "child murder."

Following the June 8 primaries, it is clear that authentic, pro-life feminism resonates with increasing numbers of women. Abortion rights advocates should stop insisting on their ever more tenuous claim on the term "feminism" and applaud their pro-life sisters' efforts to move feminism in a more diverse, popular and traditional direction.

Marjorie Dannenfelser is president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a nationwide network of more than 280,000 pro-life Americans dedicated to advancing, mobilizing and representing pro-life women in the political process.

Every situation has its own roots and the specific players either understand their responsibilities or else drift along hoping to avoid the consequences of their own neglect.. This was true in 1972 when safe abortion became widely available and its true today when our 38 years of subsequent history has colored the debate with a rainbow of reactions.. guilt is at the heart of religion and what act has a stronger potential for a woman's guilt than the aborting of a child..put that together with the mid life "finding" of religion and you have a significant group of women in a far different place mentally and economically than earlier in their lives.. now we lose perspective about how it was when an abortion seemed like a solution and decide to make up for it by crusading against our own past.. those seeking to sell guilt relief are quick to offer a conversion to a scheme where all us sinners get saved.. what a mess...

Palin gets attacked by the feminist movement because she is not in lock step with their political believes - In other words, she is a conservative - - This position weakens their argument that they are for womens rights when in reality they are a political movement backing women who believe as they do.

Sarah Palin has no qualms about stating her position on the abortion issue. Her stance is a personal committment, but not one she would FORCE on others. She understands it is a personal choice, and there are much bigger issues confronting this nation. Why does the Left continue to try to suggest otherwise?

Ms DANNENFELSER's opinion here is interesting, yet irrelevant. Suffragettes were not organized around the cause of abortion, and even if they had been, what difference does that make to this dialogue? The question on the table is whether anti abortionists can be feminists. Technically--if pregnancy is viewed as strictly a female affliction--yes! Then again, we're talking about people who can favor the death penalty and eradication of social welfare programs that help single mothers, and still claim to be opposed to abortion on moral grounds. Clearly, cognitive dissonance is not an issue. So while we're at it, let's see what the witches in Salem thought about abortion. That'll prove ...something.

Speaking as a Christian prolifer who favors the death penalty, etc., my view is based on my understanding of the Bible and doesn't agree with the Catholic view on the death penalty. The death penalty is a totally different situation which was authorized by God in the Old Testament, along with the "Do not kill" command - Jews understanding "kill" has different meanings. "Kill" is not the same as intentional murder on an innocent -- killing a proven criminal is justified and in fact ordered in order to have a safer society, etc. & is just - the same for war. As to welfare, it is intended that the church/family is supposed to help the poor; giving is supposed to be voluntary and not from the govn't. The good intentions of welfare have been totally corrupted and caused more harm than good.

Sorry, but this is garbage. This should not be labeled as a news article, as it is clearly anti-choice propaganda.

Nobody has been telling women that the only answer is to have an abortion. That's a straw man argument set up to avoid the real issue: that women should be ABLE to get a safe, legal abortion if that is their choice. "Pro-life" is a blatant misnomer. Those who want to take away the right to choose, and leave women with dangerous back-alley abortions as their only option are jeopardizing the lives of millions.

Nobody said that a woman wasn't strong enough or capable enough to have a child and still continue her education or career. For many years, and even now in many cases, that is the reality of the situation. Women have been kicked out of school and fired from jobs for being pregnant, and without childcare, many women with children have no opportunities. Instead of blaming feminists for this, blame those who have created this situation.

Sarah Palin, Sharron Angle and Carly Fiorina are NOT feminists. Nobody who wants to give government the authority to make a woman's health decisions for her is a feminist.

To be fair and balanced, I disagree. As a former counselor at a preganancy crisis clinic, I dealt with these issues. Plus I'm a mom of 5 myself & knowledgeable about all the problems involved. Anti-choice propaganda? LOL - as if prochoicers don't do that every chance they get against prolifers...for at least 30 years that we (and 50 million babies)have suffered with. This is not about a "religion"; this is about killing a living, developing human being with rights just as the mother does. They also can feel pain VERY early on. Jeopardizing lives of millions w/back-alley abortions - did you not read the recent PD article about the large meeting re the horrendous problem of deaths caused by abortions....still??? Legalized abortion has not ended that. Abortion clinic "doctors" are very uncaring people. Abortion was never meant to be, that's why it's so problematic. Do you not know of all the post abortion traumas that women suffer the rest of their lives???!!! It's not giving the govn't authority to make a woman's health decisions (health??!!!) - it's about how we don't want to have govn't authority to legalize murder. There's help everywhere for women who have unwanted pregnancies. "Safe abortion" is an oxymoron & too many have been fooled into believing lies. The girls/women we dealt with were much happier when they left & keeping their babies; either keeping or having them adopted. But they were happy because they knew they didn't kill them. Shame on America for this travesty & may it be reversed so God can bless us once again.

Sarah is a perfect example of feminism abd the type of conservative politican needed to get us out of this mess. Being a feminist had become such a militant way of thinking that it is refreshing to see someone who values family and still carves out a career. Pro life, pro family, pro country - can't go wrong!

Pro life but less children. Need more treatment to prevent unwanted conception available for all! Anyone that considers no family planning, no contraceptives, making sterilization illegal (tube ligation, hysterectomy, vasectomy, chemical, etc.) and in favor of an abstinence only plan are not in tune with nature. So long as we continue to overpopulate and outstrip the resources the world can provide, the day of reckoning is not too far off. Nature will take care of itself regardless of our efforts (or lack there of) and nature is not kind!

Feminism is the idea that a woman is allowed to choose for herself what is best for her. Early feminism was more militant because the idea of a woman who didn't obey the rules someone else made for her was so scary that few women dared to fight against the establishment.

In the fight for Black rights, this was the "Uncle Tom" position - siding with your abuser out of fear of losing the roof over your head.

The notion that women need to be protected from their own ignorance and lack of self control is unconstitutional. And woman are not going meekly back into servitude. We're dying in Afghanistan and in our own homes. I think we can manage our own reproductive systems without Big Brother.

The correct wording would clarify the debate re: abortion. Pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion. Pro-life does mean anti-choice. In the days before the legalization of abortion, plenty of women died from illegal abortions that were forced upon them by men who found the pregnancy inconvenient. These were often the same men who insisted that abortion be kept illegal.

The right of choice is exactly that--the right to chose motherhood even when others object. The right to refuse motherhood when others are in favor. It is significant that abortion and birth control were both illegal in Nazi Germany--and I don't think anyone would argue that Hitler was pro-life.

I got my own education about the bottom line of the abortion debate at the age of seven, 50+ years ago, when the laws against abortion almost cost me my mother. She was carrying a rotting, dead pregnancy, but the law refused her the proper medical care, a DC. As I and my older sister watched, she almost bled to death.

Clearly, the needless death of a chaste married woman was considered acceptable if the alternative was embraceing the notion that a woman's life was worth something in and of itself. When I ask self-proclaimed pro-lifers why such a law would exist, they avoid my eyes, duck the question, or mumble that they just don't know.

But I do--and so does anyone who wants to.

What boggles the mind is: No one ever mentions the physical damage to women who have "legal" abortions. They always tallk about how many women were maimed or died from illegal abortions, but I remember the day before abortions were legal, and they were so far and few between. I only knew 2 people who had an abortion and they were not killed or maimed. Now I can't count how many people I know who have had abortions, but I do know 1 out of every 500 has been maimed or died from "legal" abortions. A ststistic NEVER mentioned. Lying to women or hiding the truth from them does not empower, them it makes fools of them.
