Rep. Bob Etheridge Apologizes for Confrontation With Interviewers on D.C. Street

Rep. Bob Etheridge of North Carolina has apologized for a confrontation with "ambush" interviewers whose video of the incident went viral on the Internet Monday. The Democratic congressman knocked the camera from the hand of one of two young men who questioned him while walking on a Washington street. The young men, who refuse to identify themselves to the seven-term lawmaker and blurred their faces in the video, tell Etheridge they are "students" and ask whether he "fully supports the Obama agenda."

"Who are you?" Etheridge replies. When he does not get an answer, he takes a swipe at the camera. "I have a right to know who you are," he insists. The young men say they are approaching him for "a project," but refuse to give their names or school or to discuss the project.

"I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved," Etheridge said in a statement. "Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse."

Etheridge told CNN that the incident came at the end of "a long day. . . . But that's not the issue. The issue is I apologize for my actions and the people of North Carolina know me well and I apologize to these young men as well."

The Hill reports that Renee Ellmers, Etheridge's opponent in this fall's midterm election, said in a blog post: "If a teacher or principal treated a student this way -- it would raise serious questions and he would be suspended. This kind of behavior is equally unacceptable in a congressman. Congressman Etheridge should apologize -- in person -- to the two students."

The video was first mentioned in a blog post on the site Big Government, the source of a video sting that embarrassed the community advocacy group ACORN last year.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. This congressman is a disaster, he needs to resign now. It is against the law
to manhandle anyone let alone a kid. If he does not resign he needs be defeated
in November.

Simple question.... Who acted more rudely? Etheridge could have just walked away...

Actually, he did assault the students. And while this type of 'ambushing' does stink a bit, the rules say you're not allowed to lay your hands on someone. A "normal" non-politico type person would have been charged with assault. And while the "students" don't have to identify themselves to the congressman, he should have just kept walking.

These alleged "students," as yet unidentified were there to set up Rep. Etheridge who, unfortunately, fell for the bait. If it were otherwise, their identities would be known by now.

C'mon people. Where are your brains? What the students wanted is not the issue. Whether they were students or something else is not the issue. They have the absolute right to ask a question. The congressman also has the right to ask them a question, ask them to identify themselves, and if they refuse to answer then say "no comment" and just keep on walking and/or call the police - I suspect he does have a cell phone. However, the congressman absolutely does *not* have the right, by any stretch of the imagination, to lay a hand on the students, much less grab one by the arm, then by the neck. That is assault is any police book. He was in no way physically threatened or challenged. Would you give the same "get out of jail free" card to the father who grabbed his child in that manner? Or the husband who smacked his wife? How 'bout the union thugs who attacked Kenneth Gladney who was peacefully handing out flags (check Google if you don't know who Gladney is)? I don't care who you are, or how important you think you are, physical attack after being asked a question, even without being given an answer, is unacceptable and most importantly, an arrestable offense. The congressman lost his cool and blew it big time!

Why wouldn't the student tell him who he was or at least the school he attends? Just wondering...

We fully agree with cmp1996....why hasn't Etheridge been arrested yet? This video contains all the proof that is needed to press battery charges.

Etheridge should be thrown out of Congress. I saw the tape and if he had done that to me or my son, I would have him arrested for assault.

Nice job of slanting the story toward the liberal -- again for aol.

First, we have all seen the bullying, intimidation and threatening antics of the radical right extremists, so I don't blame Representative Etheridge for defending himself from what might be perceived as menacing and stalking behavior of these two "students". (Yeah, right, students.) Second, it is extremely unlikely that these "students" working on a "project", as they claim, are constituents of Etheridge's district, so he owes them NOTHING in the way of answers to any of their questions.
