Tea Party's Peg Dunmire May Complicate GOP Hopes to Win Florida House Seat

One congressional district where the Tea Party movement may feed the worst fears of some Republicans is in Orlando, Fla. where the GOP sees a chance to unseat first-term Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson but faces the complication of a Tea Party candidate in the race, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Grayson is the combative, unabashedly progressive congressman who made headlines during the health care debate when he said, ""If you get sick America, the Republican health care plan is this: Die quickly."

There are seven Republicans vying for the chance to oppose Grayson in November, but they have been joined by Peg Dunmire, a business consultant running as the candidate of the newly-born Florida Tea Party.

TPeg Dunmirehe Sentinel said Dunmire has little chance of winning given that she is a political newcomer running as a third party candidate and has little funding. But Tom Tillison, a movement activist who is not connected to the formal party that tapped Dunmire, told the Sentinel, "Everyone understands the impact a Tea Party candidate could have in that race. It's clear that Peg Dunmire's candidacy stands to benefit Alan Grayson tremendously."

The Florida Tea Party was formed in August but the Sentinel reports its "very existence is a sore spot with many activists in the tea-party movement, who want it to remain a grassroots force, not a political party."

The challenge that a Tea Party third candidate poses in Orlando is one that was reflected in a Quinnipiac University poll conducted last March.

On a generic congressional ballot, 44 percent of respondents said they would vote for the Republican while 39 percent would support the Democrat, with 16 percent undecided. But if a Tea Party candidate made it a three-way race, the Democrat would come out on top by 36 percent to 25 percent over the Republican, with 15 percent for the Tea Party standard bearer and 22 percent undecided, the poll said.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I believe in Allen Grayson, and feel he is a good balance for Florida. There is room in Congress for both progressives and conservatives...Now, if they can all grow up and just work together finding common grounds of ideas for the good of America, put self interest, political career goals, special interest bribes, and "party power" on the back burner, so we can solve some of America's most crucial issues of any generation, then maybe, just maybe the dreams of the Constitution's founding fathers' dreams for America might come true. Most Americans are sick and tired of the political bashing , fear tactics, and assumptions that we are stupid with blabberings of untruths, for political gain only!! The Tea Party is at least disrupting the apathy of "politics as usual", and I am a liberal Democrat!!! And I am sick of politics. It is time for all voices to be heard, and constituents to become well versed on issues, and be involved.

I have a feeling the Tea Party movement is going to do for the GOP like the Green Party did for the Dems when Nader got votes that would have gone to Gore...it will hurt them since it's splitting their own party.

The Tea Party is a media-created diversion. This "third party" is merely the rebranding of the failed conservative ideas of the GOP of the last forty years. Unfortunately for Americans, during difficult times, fear sells...and the conservatives are just trying to sell Americans that broken-down ideology that they used to nearly bankrupt the United States.

I think having the Tea Party as a third party movement is very healthy and beneficial to the American political scene.
