It turns out that First Lady Michelle Obama's trip to California is a mix of business and personal: She is taking time off with daughters Sasha and Malia in Los Angeles. Since Sunday, Mrs. Obama has been spotted at trendy restaurants, a hot dog stand, and Tuesday night, at a Los Angeles Lakers-Boston Celtics game.

And in other Mrs. Obama news, a Pew Research/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll shows while President Obama's ratings have nosedived, Mrs. Obama's score "remains largely strong and undiminished."

Obama's favorable rating was 56 percent, down from 65 percent in November. Mrs. Obama's favorable rating was 69 percent just a bit of a decline from 71 percent in November. Obama's unfavorable rating is 39 percent compared to 30 percent in November. Mrs. Obama's unfavorable is to 22 percent from 16 percent.

Now, back to the California trip.

On Sunday, Mrs. Obama, with Sasha, who turned 9 on June 10 and Malia, 11 -- her birthday is July 4 -- boarded a military aircraft to fly from the Washington, D.C., area to Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps base outside of San Diego to Los Angeles.

At the base, Mrs. Obama visited with military families and delivered a 23 minute speech in the late afternoon. She underscored her message that at a time when the U.S. is conducting two wars, the nation owes military families for their sacrifices and needs to lighten their load.

Obamafoodorama, the website dedicated to anything having to do with the Obama administration and food, broke the news that Mrs. Obama and her kids were in Los Angeles, dining Sunday night at Lucques on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. After the dinner, Obamafoodorama reported, Chef Suzanne Goin got a "personal thank you from First Lady."

On Monday night, TMZ staked out Osteria Mozza, also on Melrose Avenue, and spotted Mrs. Obama departing from the restaurant and stepping into a SUV, part of what seemed to look like, on the TMZ video, at least a six-car caravan plus motorcycle law enforcement escorts.

Tuesday included a visit to Pink's, a well-known Los Angeles hot dog stand. Obamafoodorama reported that Marian Robinson, Mrs. Obama's mother, was with the group at Pink's.

The East Wing did not feel obligated to disclose that the California swing was both business and personal.

Camille Johnston, Mrs. Obama's communications director, said, "Mrs. Obama is paying all appropriate expenses for private travel." Johnston also said that Mrs. Obama "only has a private schedule this week."

During Spring break, Mrs. Obama took her daughters to New York for Broadway shows and sightseeing. Last winter, the family vacationed in Hawaii. Last summer, the family vacationed in Martha's Vineyard. Earlier in the summer of 2009, Mrs. Obama took her girls to England and France.

I DON'T CARE WHAT THESE PEOPLE DO OR WHAT VACATIONS THEY ARE TAKING--AS LONG THEY ARE USING THEIR OWN MONEY--NOT THE TAXPAYER! WE ARE ALL SURVIVING ON THE EDGE AND COMBINING A SPEECH OR VISIT TO COMPENSATE FOR THEIR TRAVEL SO THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY THEIR WAY IS A DISGRACE. THE AMERICAN PUBLIC CANNOT AFFORD THEIR LAVISH LIFE STYLE! THEY DIDN'T DO ANY TRAVELLING BEFORE OBAMA WAS ELECTED--NOW THAT IT IS FREE FOR THEM, THEY DON'T CARE WHAT THEY SPEND???? GET A GRIP.

I just love hearing how much we (as taxpayers) are paying for the vacations of this family. Originally they were going to Indonesia & Australia during the girls' Easter vacation--But DARN the Health Care Bill had to be passed and they couldn't go. So they flew to NYC with friends & family.

Then it was June they were all going BUT DARN the Oil Spill. Oh well, don't worry, they will make a few scheduled appearances and combine it with their trips. That way, they don't have to pay and the taxpayer can absorb the cost.
Unfortunately, most Americans can't afford family vacations--but WE CAN PAY FOR ALL THE OBAMA'S.

Joe, get a life. I go on business trips monthly. Yes, I shop and eat dinner at my schedule meetings bad me. My employer does not paid for my shopping. Just my trip find something else to complain about. I bet her bank account can take the shopping without taxpayers help. It's not like Sarah Palin charging over $300,000.
