BP Agrees to $20 Billion Fund to Compensate Oil Spill Victims

The Obama administration and BP tentatively agreed Wednesday that the oil company would set aside $20 billion in an independently run fund to compensate victims of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

President Obama met at the White House with BP CEO Tony Hayward and other company executives to work out details of the escrow fund. But the New York Times said the deal would give BP several years to deposit the full amount so the oil giant could manage its cash flow and keep its financial viability. The fund would be run by Kenneth Feinberg, who administered the 9/11 victims fund, sources told the newspaper.
BP CEO Tony HaywardThe talks were complicated because BP's ultimate liability cannot be estimated while the deep-sea well continues spewing oil into Gulf waters -- tens of millions of gallons in the worst spill in U.S. history. The company has already spent more than $1 billion, the Times said, on containment of the oil, cleanup and claims from fisherman, oil workers and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The well, nearly a mile beneath the surface, blew out after an April 20 rig explosion that killed 11 workers. It is still leaking, although some of the oil has been contained.

Following the White House meeting, BP's chairman, Carl-Henric Svanberg, announced the company would not pay any further dividends this year. He also apologized to the American people. "What has been clear today is that this administration and our company are fully aligned in our interest of closing this well, cleaning the beaches, and care for those that are affected," he said.

Svanberg said he heard comments "sometimes that large oil companies are really companies that don't care, but that is not the case (at) BP. We care about the small people," ABC News reported.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Now I know no one is really upset with the "We care about the small people" comment. Isn't that why there is a Palin in the mix? Conservatives, also, are pretending to have the same care concernung the least of these. The only thing, the 'proof' has not been in the "pudding."

"We care about the SMALL people"??? Did Svanberg really say that?! That's like saying "the INSIGNIFCANT people." How degrading and insulting. Maybe "the EVERYDAY people" would have been a better choice of words.

Ther seems to be acceptance of responsibility by BP for the oil rig accident. I would like to see some acceptance of responsibility for this accident by the environmentalist lobby. Their pig headed refusal to accept drilling in areas closer in, and in alaska, is a major reason for drilling so far out. They should be putting money in escrow as well. Now with a moratoriam on drilling which will cost thousands more lost jobs, the only ones drilling will be china and russia. Naturally we'll be buying that same oil from them.

BP probably figured that it was worth 20 billion dollars to get Obama to shut up. Obama's attacks on BP was about to cause a war between Great Britain and the U.S.

Victims will not see this money. It will be used to pay off obama's friends. I don't trust the govt. A third party selected to watch this pot of money will be picked by obama. As in everything he touches, it costs us the taxpayers money. I can see a hoard of fraudulent claims just as in katrina. The citizens will once again be shafted. By the way, if environmentalists hadn't made such a stink about where oil companies could drill (like off the coast of Louisiana in shallower waters), we wouldn't be having this conversation today. Environmentalists are to blame.

This is great news. A $20 Billion shakedown to be funneled through a Democrat appointee to favored "victims". If the oil were cash, and they passed it through a Federal distribution system, only a trickle would reach the Gulf waters!

Sadly, the bureaucracy is making it difficult for anyone to be timely and adequately recompensed. Democrats have a talent for complicating anything. If it weren't so tragic, it would be amusing.

BP already stated they would pay damages.BP CEO Tony Hayward met with Obama as a courtesy. BP did not have to meet with Obama or did they have to agree with the fund. It was done as a good business practice. I am sure Obama will stand up beating his chest taking credit for what happened!

And why would he not? Of course, to truly measure up to the high standards the conservatives have for presidents, Obama will have to put on a flight suit and land on one of the drill platforms with a giant "Mission Accomplished" sign behind him...surely that would win over some of the whining conservatives.

You are correct, BP didn't HAVE to meet with Obama or establish a fund. And, without pressure probably would not have done so.

Thank goodness, we're saved- and what a news flash, since they'd already agreed in rpinciple to fund a multi-billion dollar fund. The devil's in the details of who gets to decide who a victim is, what it's worth, and write the check out of the fund. Don't forget the debacle of the $2000 VISA cards buying big screen TVs and alcohol and the 25 million dollars of ice in refrigerator trucks sitting in Houston after Katrina. This smacks of gamesmanship and political posturing far more than it does leadership and problem solving.

We can't afford anymore of obama's policies. Health care costs are estimated to go up at least 9% next year which will be passed on to us. They are also saying that deductibles will go up next year for most people. How did obamacare help the hardworking middle class? And if you add your over 20 child onto your plan you are making a change to your plan and will be required to go to a government healthcare plan. The devil is in the details that OUR representatives didn't take the time to read because it doesn't affect them.
