Senate Nixes Unemployment Extension

The Senate failed to move forward on a bill to extend unemployment benefits through November as well as several expiring tax breaks and spending programs.

Heartburn over deficit spending left Democrats well short of the 60 votes needed to consider the bill. The vote was 52-45.

A block of 12 centrist Democrats broke party ranks Wednesday to vote against the "tax extenders" bill, which used $80 billion in deficit spending to pay for the legislation. Among the "no" votes were Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.).

Democrats say they'll reintroduce a scaled-back version of the bill as early as tomorrow, but haven't said exactly what they'll trim. Likely candidates for cuts are $22 billion to prevent a 21 percent Medicare rate cut for doctors, $24 billion for states to offset Medicaid costs, or millions to extend unemployment benefits for people who have been out of work for 99 weeks through November.

Money to subsidize COBRA health care benefits for people who have lost their jobs, usually a priority for Democrats, was already stripped out of the bill by House Democrats because of the measure's original $200 billion price tag.

Along with the Democrats' smaller bill, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said he will offer his own proposal that has similar benefits, but would be fully paid for by using unspent stimulus money.

Senators will vote on both measures Thursday.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. It is so sad that people will be homeless because they will not pass a bill for people who are depending on unemployment. Iam in that group of people and it is so hard at this point. My boyfriend and I live together and shared the bills in which now he cannot help because he received his last check June 8,2010. I do not make enough to cover all the bills and things that need to be taken care of.I had been aduited by the Irs which has had my refund held up since Jan,2010. That money would help if they would turn it loose like unemployment that need to be turned lose. The whole thing is so sad, this world is in poor condition.I can only say pray for help.

The 325,000 99er's are dropped from the National Unemployment figure. As a group, since they are no longer getting a UI benefit, they are out of the Work Force. Add this number to the newly announced unemployment figure, June 18th, of 9.7%, the figure is slighted by about a third, adding the percentage of nearly 4%. So here we have the first " spin ", a blatant lie to the American people. Obama's Summer work program, another distraction, isn't helping either. The untold stories of people who have lost their regular employment and value, is FIVE FOLD since 2007, the bulk occurring beginning in 2008. Shortly the 93's that round of surge in unemployment eligibility will also lose their stand to have UI under the emergency measure. The Emergency Extension is halted this week and millions are without funds to continue to live. So what is next? Will the government concede it's lies and rightly report that the jobless and the creation of jobs has begun another crisis? Will we all see the spending come to a halt, driving the retail economy into the pits again. Remember the Seasonal buying in 2008 and 2009 when the buying was so scant, the Malls echoed! Well, I see more. I see the Counties and States turning away people Welfare as they are bankrupt. I see Migration to city centers were the dusty homeless and destitute will go for some help, gov't cheese, bread lines. I see Foster care orphanages created. Oh, this country has Senators who are protecting the Rich but asking Americans to foot the bill for the Banking and Realestate greed. Whoever has savings will now have to spend it away while jobs have not been created and Congress plays POLITICS as usual. Whatever happened to Obama's promise. The weeks long Senate drama is proof, that Obama has no clout, is not our leader and is on his own campaign trail while the unemployed are really paying for the financial and economic crisis that began in 2007. Joe Biden spoke up only lately and yet is it too late?

Well, all i can say is that i wish these fine people could walk day in my shoes. I am trying to find a job, but at 46 with no college education my shoices are limited and even Mc Donalds has more applications then they know what to do with. I am going to have put up for sale because i can no longer afford the payments. I have a phone bill sitting here that i dont have the money to pay so it is gonna be hard to go find a job with no vehicle and how the hell will they get in touch with my phone disconnected. I agree with chilloutgirl, i didnt even a full nd extension before they stopped my payments. they gave me just enough money after their last vote to get me through until this one. I worked and paid my dues, its not my fault the company i worked for went bully-up.

Anyone who thinks that the administration is responsible for the lack of movement on the extension is really out of touch. If you look real close at the conservative side of the isle, you might find the real people who are hurting the millinons of people that are out of work.It really is time for the jerks in congress to stop palying politics and start working for ALL of the people of THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

The senate doesn't care about you only there corupted agenda, The leaders of this country don't care about the poor or strugling, they will laghe at you and go play golf. If the American people don't stand up and fight the powers that be,we will be a third world country. AND if America comtinues down a path of carelessness, and not helping there fellow man or neighbor and not working and careing for each other, we will destoy ourselves before the feds. do WAKE UP AMERICA. And if Moderation deletes this message, it's just another example of federal control.

this is an outrage!... to cut off Americans with no warning. i'm on only tier 1, out of the 4 tiers that i am eligible for. other unemployed got their 99 weeks of aid, why are we not getting the same!?... for congress to spend billions on other countries & face book studies & puppet theater stimulus waste, but to not fund the economy/benefits & directly help us Americans is flat out retarded!?... this would be the worst thing ever seen in American history. they never cut benefits during the second worse depression of the 1930s! ( todays recession/depression is by far worse statistically)... there is such outrage over the internet, that i really can't see this administration willing to throw away the 2012 obama re-election... & breaking this promise will make all of congress look terrible!.. sure ok try to make a statement by shooting down the bill by only a few votes really, but when push comes to shove tomarrow, congress will pass the extension bill... because in reality, everyone knows its a "jobs/extension bill", not a deficit/tax bill... & thats why its called a jobs bill... 10 million people would be thrown onto the streets almost instantly... thats never happened even during the housing crisis!!!...congress plays politics, but they aren't stupid enough to officially block unemployment benefits... with no warning either (unemployment recording @ my local office even had a message recorded last week saying they anticipate the end of the year bill being passed... now 4 days later its changed? congress freezes unemployment with no warning??? are you kidding us!!! now i see why there is outrage overnight!!!... they better pass it on friday like analysts expect!

I sat here reading this article and wondering "What are these people thinking?" I honestly do not see how some people will survive if they do not extend these unemployment benefits. I for one am afraid for myself as well as alot of other people. All I can do is hope and pray that it passes until the jobs become available again. I worked over 20 years same place and paid my dues trust me... It is time that this country stands up together and takes care of their own!

The dems better keep the unemployment compensation in force. If they let down the people who elected them they will be collecting it themselves. What is wrong with these people. With the true unemployment rate at over 15% they cut back. Are they admitting their philosophy of spending your way out of this God awful mess was wrong. That is the same mistake of 1937 and it prolonged the depression. Consumer prices fell for the 2nd month. We are facing deflation. The government should be spending money. The deficit can be paid off later with inflated less valuable dollars. This will be our lost decade.
