Gulf Oil Spill Could Last 2-Plus Years, Experts Warn

They tried and they tried but they could not stop the oil from flowing. Instead, BP has succeeding in installing two containment caps over the well in the gulf that are now capturing 25,000 barrels a day, with the company promising "enhancements" that will raise the number to 50,000 by the end of the month. That would be about 90 percent of the estimated 60,000 barrels that are leaking into the gulf every day.

Of course, nobody believes the flow can be truly halted until BP finishes drilling two relief wells and plugging the well with cement, an operation that is not expected to conclude until August at the earliest.

By that time, at the current rate, an estimated 4 million barrels would have leaked into the gulf, 16 times the amount that spilled from the Exxon Valdez in 1989.

And yet, there is still a distinct and very real danger that BP could fail in the relief well operation too, a horrifying prospect but one that some scientists have begun taking seriously.

"If it went uncontrolled, it could certainly leak for two years and certainly longer than that," Philip Johnson, a professor of petroleum engineering at the University of Alabama, was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Johnson went on to explain that the leak rate would be drastically reduced once the natural gas was exhausted, although he decline to say when that would happen.

There is also some dispute as to the actual size of the oil reservoir itself, with Hayward telling Congress today that the well held 50 million barrels at present, while other experts and congressmen maintaining a 500 million figure was more likely, meaning that the oil could drain for well beyond two years if not stopped.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I feel BP has never wanted to stop the Oil from coming out ,Their aim was allways to continue to get the Oil.The dispercent was used so if Obama decided to let others come in to suck up the Oil it would be useless.Obama on day one needed to okay all the Countrys that could sent tankers that were needed to be allowed to come instantly and no dispercent. The Gulf of Mexico is now a body of polution and will be for Decades if not Hundreds of years and yes if the leak continues it will spead to other bodies of water it all will not head to the Beachs so that it can be cleaned up.BP in their continued effort to get the OIL is drilling two relief holes ,what a Joke sure the relief holes in time will do the job they will allow BP to collect more Oil till it runs out.

I wish the media would read and "understand" OPA '90 (the flow/chain of command on this incident was and has been followed, as per the Local, State, and Federal Regulations)! Bottom line, BP submitted a "horrible" contingency plan and the MMS approved it - where are the MMS approving authorities? We are a "free enterprize" society, big or small, companies have one goal - make money and under this system, the regulating authorities (local, state, and federal) are the "people's protecton" - this is what has failed and needs to be fixed. WARNING - when it is fixed (and I believe it will be); the cost of whatever the "companies" are producing (oil, gas, widgits, etc.,) will cost more because in a free enterprize system - if the regulators require me to do "x" then whatever that additional cost to comply with "x" ALWAYS - WITHOUT FAIL, goes to the consumer... it is what it is!

Everything BP says is lies. All they want is control of the Gulf and all of the oil in it. They want this crisis to get as bad as possible, and destroy as much of the gulf as possible. They didn't take safety seriously for a reason...because they didn't and don't care about the environment, human life, or wildlife. These are all things that stand in the way of more profit, more drilling, and more oil. can you believe that our federal government is naive enough to let the same foreign company that has sucked Africa dry of oil suck our oil out of our land? Their should be no foreign anything taking our oil.... and then be left in charge after a catastrophic event? This really makes the United States look like a weak, corrupt country. Our government CANNOT be trusted....
Any candidate that makes it deep enough into an election past the primary, is already in the pocket of these big corporations, and in the end, no matter the media spin, will carry out the plans of these "elite" organizations before they keep the interests of the American people.
