Unemployment dropped in 37 states in May, but the declines may have had more to do with people giving up their job hunting than with any surge in hiring, the Associated Press said.

The Labor Department said six states saw increases in their jobless rates, while seven had no change. Nevada, at 14 percent, replaced Michigan as the state with the highest rate. The news came a day after a report that initial claims for unemployment benefits jumped by 12,000 last week.
Career Fair, New York City
In Ohio, where President Obama promoted the benefits of his stimulus package on Friday, the unemployment rate dipped slightly from 10.9 percent in April to 10.7 percent last month.

Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. I guess the President was really good at the encouraging employment in Nevada
Don't forget to tell everyone NOT to go to Vegas a few more times...that should really help Harry Reid and Nevada stay at the top of the list.....honestly when can we open another can of political know it alls....

The only reason the unemployment stats are changing is because the new extension is hung up and not approved yet. A lot of folks are just falling off the role and unable to collect further benefits because they've run out of the previous extensions, not because they've found jobs. Remember, only the ones collecting are part of the percentages of unemployment. Thousands and thousands of folks who normally work, want to work, are looking for work just haven't found any but can no longer collect unemployment. Therefore not counted in the percentages.

How can umemployment go down and hiring is nonexistent ??
I work for a comnpany that's had a hiring freeze with no plans for release.
This is our busiest season but we are making due. There will more than likely be layoffs again at the end of the year.

It's unfortunate but we are in a huge mess because the line of cr-p they keep feeding us. How can you consider the job less rate going down when they temp workers. ? how can the jobless rate go down when the people get hired for govt. jobs. Also govt. workers and politicians should have to pay into their own pensions instead of collecting a life time of paychecks and health care. What they voted in for themselves, stuck it in our butts. From what I understand, the constitution isn't supposed to work the way they voted things in for themselves. I think, if I have to pay SSI and healthcare they should too. And for peple who cam to this country and collect SSI and never worked a day in this country is past mind boggling. No wonder we are going broke

What a crock, don't they realize that everyone that was on UE ins lost it because an extention was not approved by congress to make it look like the UE rate dropped. So it is not due to jobs or people not looking for jobs, it is due to the loss of UE insurance. All claims have been denied that would have went on the extention.

Maybe the reason the unemployment rate is dropping is because people are exhausting their benefits or, in my case, having their benefits canceled! I spent last year accepting whatever temp jobs offered to me so I could obtain a permanent job. Now NJ unemployment is telling me that I'm not eligible for any extensions because I didn't work enough! If I had stayed on my original claim and didn't attempt to find suitable work, I would still be able to collect. Now I'm getting nothing and still don't have a job. Basically, I'm being punished for doing what I was supposed to be doing! Thank NJ unemployment!

How long will it be before the 2010 Cenus takers are looking for work again. If the unemplyment rate in Florida has dropped I'd like to know what counties they are getting the numbers from because here in Collier county there are not too many jobs. I think the American public had caught on to the government fudging the numbers. My question is does the lower rate include the people that are no longer looking and the ones who can't collect unemployment benefits any longer?

Wait until the Bush tax cuts expireand every tax payer and corporation will have to pay higher taxes, plus added health care cost, this will help the unemployment rate!!!! Oh and by the way the IRS will be in charge of enforcing the health insurance law. Just think if you can't afford insurance because your still unemployed you can go to prison!!! This will cut the unemployment rate down two ways, more prisoners (prisoners are not unemployed) & more prison guards.

The reason why unemployment dropped in 37 states, according to the report is people gave up looking for work. Since they are not looking for work, they are not consider unemployed any longer. If you look at the retail sales, ny states manufacturing index the phiily fed index they all are going down!!! Everthing is going down, but the Fed says the recovery is on!!!
