After falling behind by two goals in the first half, Team USA achieved a stunning comeback to tie Slovenia late in the second half today.

The Americans even looked poised to claim victory in the 85th minute after Donovan's free kick was headed into the Slovenian net by Edu, but the Malian referee, Koman Coulibaly (nickname: "Sleepy Eyes") called a foul on the U.S. and nullified the goal.

As a result all the American fans are pushing now for Algeria to defeat England, which would provide two chances for the Stars and Stripes to advance in Group C.

And however exalted at the stunning rally they may be, many viewers are still bitter about what they feel was unfair treatment by the ref. A sampling.

Live Blogs

WorldCupBlog blogger Andres: Someone smack the sh*t out of this referee, please.

CBS Sports: This ref hasn't had his finest evening, that's for sure. Just ask Findley.

The Wall Street Journal: And fans here are livid. "This is a Slovenian ref!" cries out one fan. They've been frustrated with the ref all game but things have boiled over. All are incredulous that Edu's score was called offside.

USA had a great game against Slovenia. Great way to come back from 2-0. Had the ref worn his glasses it would have been USA 3-2!Fri Jun 18 16:12:24 via web

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
