Obama and the Oil Spill: A Loathe Story

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

If there is any humor in a political cartoon then it will be satirical humor.

Political cartoons are made to graphically depict a political situation in a way so that people may understand the situation better. Or they are meant to make a political point understandable in a graphical manner.

If you want funny, then go to the funny pages. But even there you will find about half of the cartoons are not funny, per se, but are trying to make a political or social point.

As a nation we are losing our sense of humor. But being in overwhelming personal and public debt, with 10% unemployment, in a continuing recession that is causing real personal pain for many, and at war for seven years with no hope of winning because no one has defined what "winning" would be, can do that to you.

These Cartoons are the least bit funny, they may have a point but totally lack humor

I completely agree - that they aren't funny. I rarely, if ever, see a point. Isn't that the point of any political cartoon? To have a cogent point AND be funny. It never happens with this one.

There is nothing funny about de-regulation that brought us this disastor. There is nothing funny about the state of the Gulf. Its just one more perfect example of how failed legislation in the form of de-regulation ends up costing we tax payers in the end. From Wall Street to the Gulf, same outcome, same end results and the same old crowd out there cheering for more. Its not funny, its sad and a reflection of why were in the shape were in. And to associate this spill with Obama is just intellectually dishonest but thats whats happening by the very people that made sure this could happen with their failed polices and corruption.

The spill is not BO's fault, but the disorganized, ineffective response is. Just as Katrina wasn't Bush's fault, but the poor response in the aftermath was. Therefore, associating the weak federal response to BO is fair and legit.
As for de-regulation: get real. There are numerous regs on the books- they just were not being enforced by the M&M department, which approved this operation during BO's term. If they enforced current regs and completed real inspections this wouldn't have happened.

I would suggest that it's his job. Time for these public servants to take credit for the quality of work we're getting from them.

I would not only SUGGEST that it's Obama's job. I would quote the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA90), "It is the Presidents responsibility.........."

They do take credit for everything and blame for nothing.

It's going to get a LOT worse. It will enter the food chain in the Gulf and if it does make it around and into the Gulf Stream I can only imagine the consequences our already pulverized domestic seafood industry will suffer. Plenty of job openings at the EPA coming.

Does it seem strange that no one has brought up the fact that the gov't agency responsible for allowing the permits for BP is never mentioned? MMS (a government agency that should have been watching out for the permits oil companies were being granted) was too busy watching porn and copying the pencil statements from oil companies and authorizing these drillings without making sure how safe it was.

Now Obama wants to tell the American people that the reason is because there isn't any oil in shallow waters? EPA has stopped the drilling closer to shore and forced deep sea drilling. EPA has stopped drilling in safer areas on land (ex: Alaska.)

It would be great if we had the ability to use "green" energy (solar, wind turbines, etc.) but this will take time. Let's use our own oil fields to reduce our dependence on foreign oil until we can bridge the gap. Eventually we can but our main concern should be to use our own oil until we can shed our dependency on foreign oil.

It does seem strange, okitori, considering the fact that I have read/seen about MMS in literally DOZENS of places! I don't know what planet you are on!
By hindsight, what action on Obama's part would have made the crucial difference? Clearly, shutting down Deepwater Horizon due to mutiple safety violations! Boy, wouldn't the Repubs be foaming at the mouth if he had done that!

Hardly. Despite the disgusting drooling over the possibility that this President could be brought down by those too ignorant and unpatriotic to work WITH him to ensure problems are solved, instead of AGAINST him because the problems aren't being solved they way they would do it.

jancf:

I guess your statement about working with people would apply to Obama working with BP and with the local governments and foreign governments offering help so diligently, and working with his own departments to do their jobs in the first place and regulate in a timely manner as they should, without being high on meth (like the inspector for this rig was), watching porn, etc, right?

Oh wait - it took him 2 months to do any of that... hmmm...
